I always like to read your posts on Math. In your posts you have shared that you have a degree in Math. So, I thought you would be the best person to ask this question. I have a 5 year old and would like your input on what a very complete and rigorous math program would look like for elementary and middle school. If you could share specific curriculum for each of those grades (PK-8th), supplements, helps and any other thing that you could think of to make a wonderful math program for a child, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much!

Hi Elena,

In the elementary years, the children should learn basic arithmetic - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents. At a young age, playing games helps. Most kids love playing store. More than I do.

We have used MUS for K through Algebra. I think it is a solid program for the elementary years. It is weak on word problems, so we supplemented with Singapore's Challenging Word Problems a year behind. If I could do it all over again, I would start with CWP 2 when teaching MUS Gamma. MUS + CWP was a good combination for us.

There are several good elementary math programs. Singapore is excellent at teaching mathematical thinking. Personally, I think this would produce the strongest math student (provided it fits the child's learning style and the parent's teaching style). I have heard good things about Right Start. It seems to consistently be called fun and engaging. Life of Fred Fractions and Decimals & Percents (which we never used) seems to be very engaging and helps the children to apply math to real life.

Someone gave me a book called Family Math, but I never used it. I'm not much of a "fun" teacher. :glare:

I encourage you to use Cathy Duffy's books to help determine your child's learning style and choose a math curriculum that fits their learning style.

Good luck!
