I want to actually start to teach Becca how to knit - I have a mind-boggling assortment of needles, but what do you think would be best for a 6 year old? The long straights, or circular needles? And what size would you start her at?

no clue, but do you wanna teach me how to knit? I have been trying to teach myself from a book while my ds5 chants "Knit 1 pearl 2" from big comfy couch and it is not going well. I can sort of cast on, but then my stitches are pretty terrible.

My daughter started with straight needles when she was 8, but her teacher moved her to circular needles during the first class. For her, the circular needles were just what she needed. I can't remember what size she started with. Oh, and my dd just started with the garter stich. That is all she knows right now. She didn't exactly stick with it.

Both my kids knit. I knit too but I didn't teach them - we went en famille to a set of lessons where the instructor got the littles & the beginners started & meanwhile had the experienced people working on lace & bobbles etc....

Anyway - she got the beginner children started on US9 but on short ones - maybe 6 inch? Their project was a teddy bear sweater made out of prob something like aran weight yarn in a good tight cotton/synthetic blend so it wouldn't split while knitting.. The pattern was of blocks of the various basic combos of K & P.... easily finishable project (unlike scarves which take forever & are boring!).

I don't think it matters what size needles, just the length. My great uncle taught my grandmother to knit using two 4" nails and a ball of string :) I'm not sure if flat or circular needles are the best. Historically, circular knitting was developed long before straight needle knitting, but I still can't do circular knitting and I have tried!

 You'll be my guinea pig... I'm not used to teaching grownups! Check out knittinghelp.com - they have short videos for each step. :)
