yarrow
My normal bp numbers have been high-normal and I've been keeping an eye on them while trying to get back on the treadmill but lately, I've had bp spikes as high as 198/148 that come out of nowhere and disappear within minutes. My doc has me on bp meds now but I'm wondering, has anyone had these and what makes them start so suddenly?
mom4him
Yes, about 4 yrs ago. My bp would shoot up to 220/178. This happened twice that I took it. For me it was major stress going on at that time with extended family and church. It was a pretty aweful mess. The bad part is now I fight high bp. I am on meds but I hate taking them. I hope you can figure out what the problem is. Just a thought, has your doc tested your blood sugar?
yarrow
not blood sugar but adrenals & kidneys. Thank you for the suggestion - I'll mention it to my doc. Immediately after the first time I had chest pain, breathlessness, etc. but had a complete cardiac workup and was told that high blood pressure can cause all those symptoms. It just literally started out of nowhere - no stress, just life. I did just find out that my salivary progesterone levels are really really high after supplementing with cream for 2 years and I can't help but wonder if there is a connection. Did you ever find out what started yours - was it just stress?

vettechmomof2
Not me, but my mom does. She gets them with attacks of Vertigo/Menieres. Jean :iagree:, this is normally what happens to me. i do not have high bp the rest of the time and do not take any meds for it either. Once my vertigo gets better then i tend to feel better and the bp drops again.
mom4him
Did you ever find out what started yours - was it just stress? No, I never did but I am sure it was the stress that put me way over. Our life at that time was a mess in so many ways. Long Story! Now, I never did have a total physical either. I am not much for taking myself to a dr.:001_huh: The family Dr that we use knows me well enough by now that he doesn't push for tests unless he thinks I am near dead. LOL I think he figures this way I will come see him when I really need to?
Amy in KS
You might check your thyroid as well. A failing thyroid can do this as well.
Heather in Neverland
I get BP spikes when my heart arrhythmia is acting up. Are you experiencing any palpitations?
yarrow
sure what "palpitations" mean but if it's my heart pounding hard and fast, then yes. I'm always left feeling terrible after it happens.

My doc has me on bp meds now but I'm wondering, has anyone had these and what makes them start so suddenly? ? for you: Is your doctor a family dr., etc. or a cardiologist? Reason I ask, I go to a cardiologist (I have something else besides the high blood pressure though) and occasionally he does a stress test on me. He is in the room with me on a treadmill and he watches to see if my bp goes up abnormally when he gets me up to my max heart rate. I know it is supposed to go up when you exercise, but when it goes up abnormally they are concerned. If you feel bad after this like you mentioned, I'd at least give the dr. a call and see what he/she says --especially since you feel terrible. I felt awful when my heart was not beating properly. Good luck :)
yarrow
is a family doc. I will ask about a stress test. Thanks.
Heather in Neverland
is a family doc. I will ask about a stress test. Thanks. Please do, and maybe an EKG and an echocardiogram as well. It took years for a doctor to properly diagnose my condition and get me on the right meds. I know what you mean by feeling terrible after it happens. :grouphug:
AuntieM
A friend in college, and my mother, experienced this. College friend was correctly diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. Mom received a preliminary diagnosis of mvp, only to find out that she was having panic attacks. There could be various causes. Go see a cardiologist!
