Question about Horizons Math for 2nd-3rd grade

I have been using Saxon for my son's 2nd grade math. I have heard good things about Horizons and was thinking about trying it, but according to the Sonlight catalogue they teach multiplication facts from 1-10 in Horizon Math 2. I am almost completely through with Saxon 2, and my son has only learned multiplication facts for 1, 5 and 10 so far. Is anyone able to clear up for me if Horizons literally teaches every multiplication fact for 1-10 in second grade, or do they just start introducing it like Saxon, and go into the multiplication/division more completely in Horizons 3.

Thanks for your time!

It is almost 3 am where I am and I can't sleep! I just saw your post and I don't want to turn on all the lights to check back in our books but I can still help.

We are currently in Horizons 3 and I know for sure we have covered all multiplication at this point. Even if they do in Horizons 2 (Can't remember without looking) that doesn't mean you can't go ahead and start using it if you like all the other aspects of the program. Just go over each multiplication section with him and do the one together he hasn't learned, cross those problems out or offer a multiplication chart of manipulatives for the facts he hasn't learned yet. In second grade most of the multiplication is not more than 10-15 problems on most days in the second half of the book.

Division isn't started until Horizons 3. Of that I am almost 100% sure (unless it's simply to begin teaching the concept visually of dividing things into equal groups).

Hope that helps and feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.

Have you looked into RightStart Math? I just got back from a conference and was OVERWHELMED by how much better it is than most Math learning for us. My dh is an Math wiz, and he said this is how he sees Math. It is taught in a very hands-on way and really even helped me understand the why of Math. If you haven't seen them check it out. I don't know how the online looking compared to doing, but at least it will give you an idea. http://www.RightStartMath.com

Yes, as stated earlier Horizons covers all tables 1-10 in Horizons 2. The cover it more in 3, and then around lesson 60 in 3 they start division. I felt that the TM expected the student to *know* the tables in 2, not just be introduced to them. I know everyone handles it differently, but I let my DD write down the multiplication tables from memory and then use the table. At the end of 2 we found Times Tales, and then the tables were solid and we haven't looked back. FWIW, we love Horizons here and it's giving my kids an awesome foundation in basic math.
