C_l_e_0..Q_c
You never *need* the completer blocks. You can go through all of MUS with just the basic blocks. That said, we own the completer block set and we've used it quite a bit in Gamma. In fact, as my daughter is still very dependent on the blocks to understand certain notions, having those extra blocks were really helpful. If your budget allows it, and your kids need the manipulation part, go ahead, it's handy to have them.
Joyful
We did fine in gamma without the completer blocks. But, to be honest, having more blocks would have come in handy for some of the problems involving larger numbers. DS happens to be more of a conceptual learner when it comes to math, so he didn't really "need" to have it. But there were a few times when he said that he wished we had more blocks, b/c he was having fun just working out the problems with the blocks. I agree that if your finances allow for it, it would be nice to have the completer blocks.
swellmomma
No you don't *need* them for gamma, but they sure do come in handy. I bought them because I have 3 using the blocks at a time and needed to have more of everything, but have found that with some of the bigger equations the extra blocks have proven to be beneficial.
