newlifemom
1hr 20mins to the beginning of the end. Can't believe it. With just a few interruptions, I have watched it from the very beginning. Love it. [though a lot, well all of the sex scenes are completely unnecessary imho.]
1bassoon
Sigh. I used to be addicted to this show. I was going to watch it, but then Bolt came on Netflix, and the kids and I watched that. I'll have to catch it on DVD at some point. . . .
Tree House Academy
I was honestly wanting more in the end than we got. For instance, I totally don't get the Carter/Kim relationship or why she is so distant (unless it is just the loss of the child?). Anyway, I wanted more. It was nice to see old faces and hear the comments/see old episodes in the special from 8-9 before the actual show. I have to say that the one episode I remember other than when Mark Greene died was when Carter was stabbed and fell on the floor only to see Lucy there dying. To this day, I remember that scene perfectly in my mind.
Sandy in Indy
I thought it was a great ending! It was poignant but not overly sad...and I was expecting a 5 hanky episode. I do wish there had been a better resolution for Kim and Carter. But otherwise, I thought things were tied up rather nicely. I loved that they brought Green's daughter back. I liked that they used the original theme music and clips from the older credits. It makes me want to go back and watch the older episodes. JFSinIL
So do not read if the show hasn't aired in your time zone yet. Just done googling to see if I can find where they filmed the Joshua Carter Center (no luck) but came across a sad tidbit - John Wells was the uncle (well, married to the girls mom for a time) of a 17-yr-old who did die of having 20 shots at a party last Dec. So he incorporated his niece's death into the last show. Glad ER fit in one last public service type of message - kids, don't drink!!!! Brenda in FL
I enjoyed it - I liked how they did the ending - and I can't say too much more without spoilers so I'll leave it at that. I'll miss the show - but I am glad that now I have an extra hour on Thursday evenings. And I will not replace it with another TV show! abreakfromlife
I liked all of it except the ending.....when Carter was talking about needing to make a phone call, we kept thinking that was going to be for some reason.....and so then it ended and we were like 'what about the phone call?' :tongue_smilie: I had kind of guessed that they were going to end it just doing ER work, like any other day. Through most of the season, we had thought that what Carter was doing was going to be redoing the ER or the whole hospital; especially when he first came back and was talking about how broken down stuff was....so the center was actually kind of a letdown. I wish they would have had Kym and Carter get back together better, or at least have her say she was willing to try. I'm so sad it's over. I have the first season queued up in Netflix :D:D
JFSinIL
I believe the phone call was to be to Kem - she had said "call me" or words to that effect when he asked her if they could meet for lunch as she left the Foundation place.
Colleen in NS
I liked the ending - not all tear-jerky. All those medical personnel standing outside, waiting for the ambulances to come, ready to get to work on another day in the life of the ER. And when (??) said, "You workin', Carter?" and Carter got involved, then Carter said, "Dr. Green, are you coming?" and the young Green ran after them with a big smile. It was as if it wasn't ending, but a new generation of ER workers was beginning. I also remember the scene from years ago when Carter and Lucy got stabbed - it stuck with me for a long time - and ESP. when the mean doctor (bald-headed bossy guy) tried to revive Lucy, and then the scene where he is grieving over her after she died. Alice
I haven't watched the finale yet. I have to watch online as we don't have TV. I haven't watched ER in so long until these last few weeks when I've been watching this final season. I didn't know until recently that I could watch online. ER brings back great memories for me. It started when I was in med school. We would all take a study break from the library and go to the student lounge to watch. Of course we all took great pleasure in yelling at the TV when we thought they got the medicine wrong....because as 1st and 2nd year med students we were oh so smart. :) My dh hates watching medical shows with me because I still can't refrain from that kind of annoying behaviour. I think that's why I stopped watching ER after I got married. But it's been fun to revisit it recently and I plan on watching the finale sometime this weekend. TeacherZee
I loved the ending. I thought it was incredibly fitting. I am glad they managed to do the last thing on Mark Greens list, "fix Rachel". I loved the story lines with the old woman with MS and the man with AIDS. I thought they were incredibly poignant.

cathmom
When Lucy was killed, I was so stunned! I called my sister who watches ER and blurted out on her answering machine, "I can't believe they killed Lucy!" Then later I realized she might not have watched it yet, but there was nothing I could do about it. Turns out she was really sick and my dad had taken her to a real ER. When they got back to her apartment, my dad said, "You have some messages" (I had called back to apologize) and played them. Then my dad started freaking out - "Who is Lucy???? What happened????" but she told him it was just ER LOL. My dh still teases me about that! :D
sassenach
I thought it was a great finale. I loved the scene with all the old docs sitting in the bar, because it just seems like something that would totally happen in real life. I LOVED that they brought Rachel back. I thought Frank's expression when she said who she was was so fitting. The only part that I spaced out on a little was the story lines that involved the current cast. I haven't watched the show in a couple of years. They did an hour-long retrospective before the finale aired that was fantastic. It made me very nostalgic. Dh and I had an AAAAHHHH!!! moment when we realized that ER has been on since I was 13, and dd is going to be 13 in 1 year and 1 month, and we're going to be parents of a teenager, oh my gosh! Then I started laughing hysterically and dh got a twitch in his eye. I wonder if they'll put out the whole series in a box set. How much do you think 15 years of a show would cost? The medicine is for the most part accurate just way overdramatic. The episode that sticks out most for me was one of the very first seasons where Mark Green is taking care of an OB patient. The patient dies (and I think he is sued which is a big storyline...I can't remember those details.) What I do remember is that every single possible complication happens to this woman. My roommate and I were watching it (she went into OB eventually) and just cracking up. We'd yell something like "it's a shoulder dystocia!" and lo and behold it would be a shoulder dystocia. Technically it could have all happened but it was just hysterical to us. The other thing they do that is unrealistic is that it's like there is only one set of doctors in the hospital. I know why they do that, they can only have so big of a cast and they want to concentrate on those characters. But the procedures they will have the ER staff do because they don't want to have to bring in the actual specialist who would do it in real life are often very silly. I don't mind that so much as it's TV and it would be really boring if it was actually like real life.

A woman giving birth to twins started bleeding after the second baby came out (I think her uterus was coming out). But it was as if someone poured buckets of blood on the floor - it was so gross. My husband ran out of the room, he was so disgusted :lol: and I just laughed - I couldn't imagine that being real!
abreakfromlife
I agree with the scene with Rachel and Frank. I got a tear in my eye and dh was laughing at me :tongue_smilie: That makes more sense that the call was to Kym. I'm imagining them back together :D I thought the pull-out shot at the end was awesome. I don't think they've ever shown the whole hospital, have they? For the life of me I can't remember the episode where Lucy dies. I remember liking that she was on b/c I love Kellie Martin. I can't believe I don't remember that! Technically it could have all happened but it was just hysterical to us. My midwife was always laughing at that, too. I had an abruption 2 years ago with my dd, and I had no idea what it was or why it was so serious at the time - I knew bleeding going into labor wasn't good, but didn't grasp the seriousness of it. The next season on ER they had an abruption and a couple of other things go wrong in a patient and I remember it freaked me out so badly....I had my ds 1 year after the abruption and I was talking to my midwife during labor about the ER episode and she had seen it and was laughing at it and telling me how unrealistic it was, especially for that many things to go wrong. It made me feel a little better, LOL. dh and I had an AAAAHHHH!!! moment when we realized that ER has been on since I was 13, I had the same thing! I'm 27 - ER has been on since I was 12 - I've been watching it for more than half my life! No wonder I'm so sad it's over.....I haven't been with anything for this long  On Amazon, you can get Seasons 1-9 for $198, and Season 10 is $32 - that's all that's out on DVD so far it looks like. I think I'll stick to Netflix :tongue_smilie: That would be a cool collection to have, though.

dirty ethel rackham
I loved the finale, except for a few parts. I loved having Rachel back - and the scene with Frank - OMG - what a heart-tugger. I loved seeing all those old cast-mates, especially Dr. Benton with his son Reese. That was great. Elizabeth was always one of my favorites and that little tension with Benton at the end was interesting. I would like to have seen more of Dr. Lewis. I was quite irritated with the lack of resolution of the Carter/Kem relationship. After the loss of their baby, she always struck me as selfish. Didn't want to try to have a relationship because it was so hard. Everything was about her. Then, her leaving things up in the air like that... As much as I wanted things to work out for them, at that point, I wanted him to say "the heck with her." I also hated the twin situation. They always over play the drama on those scenes. As a natural childbirth educator, I always want to throw tomatoes at the screen whenever they have a birth and last night was not exception. As he was pulling on the cord, I said to myself "inverted uterus" and guess what happened. I thought the ending was perfect.

nukeswife
I thought it was an ok finale, but also wished they'd had a better resolution for Carter and Kem. I remember the Carter stabbing and Lucy dying episode but the one that really choked me up was when Greg Pratt died. I almost couldn't believe it. I cried for like 20 minutes after that one and kept saying "No, not him" I was just shocked that it was his character that was going to die. And in your post below where you mention Dr. Green taking care of the OB patient - I remember how he would do EVERYTHING in the Emergency Dept. I thought this was ridiculous (and it is!), but then when I worked in a very small ED, I was working late one night and a pregnant woman came in with heavy bleeding. There was no OB near the hospital, and the Director of Nurses said, "Well can't you do a C-section here?" (in the ED) WHAT?! That would be a BIG "No, I can't!" i.love.lucy
I was GLUED to the TV last night. I loved it. I've watched every episode for 15 years, so in a way it feels like I've lost a friend or something. Did anyone else notice that the nurses that had been there for all those years, like Tuney (sp?) were not mentioned at all. No interview in the retrospective or anything. They saw it all! I know they weren't main characters, but still very much a part of the show. Let's face it, it's the nurses who really impact lives in a hospital. My ds was in the NICU for 7 weeks after being 11 weeks premature, so I know. I liked how in the retrospective thing they showed some of the fabulous guest actors that have been on. Sally Field was so, so great. And I love the Alan Alda storyline. It was just a really great show and will be so missed!

funschooler5
I really enjoyed the last episode. I missed a few seasons a few years back, when Archie first came on...wasn't his character kind of a jerk at first? I only saw a few episodes of him when he was first on but that's the impression I have. Now he's one of my favorites. I thought Angela Bassett was excellent in the few episodes she was in. I would have liked to see her in more. So glad to see Rachel back on there. Her scenes back when Mark was dying brought tears to my eyes. When she puts those headphones over his ears as he's dying...so sad! I also remember the Carter/Lucy stabbing. That scene was really shocking! In fact, my dh (who never watched the show) happened to see that episode with me. Whenever we see the actor who played the guy that stabbed them on another show, we say "Hey that's that guy that killed Lucy!" That scene stuck with him, and he didn't even know who the characters were. Does anyone know what season Archie started on the show? I need to watch those to catch up!
Alice
LOL! Dating myself here, but we did the exact same thing with St. Elsewhere! (Does anyone remember THAT one?!) I LOVED ST. Elsewhere. But for me that was more like middle school. I used to get to stay up late to watch it. :) I watched the ER finale yesterday afternoon. Both kids were sick with fever and fell asleep on me so I figured what else did I have to do. I thought the finale was great. I think they did a very nice job of going out with style. Someone mentioned the twin deliveries. The twin with meconium wasn't that unrealistic. We used to get called to a lot of meconium deliveries in residency and they are terrifying. You wait with a ton of adrenaline going through you to see what the baby will look like. It's true that they try not to have the baby cry so you can suction well. A lot do come out screaming and active and are fine. Then as the pediatrician you give a big sigh of relief and smile at the parents and go away. But I've seen some meconium aspiration babies in the NICU that were very very sick. So it can be a big deal. You don't actually leave the baby intubated that long though...but that was a minor technical point that I'm ok with. Made it more dramatic. :)

Evergreen State Sue
Thanks for this thread. It let me relive the last episode all over again. Our family is thinking of not watching regular TV when digital takes over in June. I'm so glad I got to finish out ER. I think I appreciate the hard work those actors did even more after realizing those long camera shoots following them around in frantic situations really made them have to know those lines and try to get it right the first time. The episode a few weeks ago that had Carol Hathaway and Dr. Ross in Seattle had a mistake that really bothered me. I was wondering if anyone else from Washington State caught it. Carol referred to Spokane (a big city in eastern Washington) but mispronounced it. It is pronounced "Spo-can" and she said it like "Spo-cane" so confidently like she knew is was pronounced that way. I suppose if they have problems getting all the medical stuff accurate even with a doctor overseeing the show, I shouldn't expect they would get this right. It just made me think they looked at a map of Washington and said, "Hey, let's use this city."

abreakfromlife
Sorry, I should have been more clear. They switched actresses for Rachel Green. oh, I don't remember that either. I thought that was a kind of odd question. Makes more sense now :D

Cathy in IL
I was reminded of my son's hospital stay a couple months ago. On ER one of the doctors was explaining to the husband that his dying wife had lowering blood pressure secondary to sepsis. Increasing her blood volume would cause fluid to back up into her lungs and worsen her respiratory status. That was just about the way the doctor explained my son's condition to me. He was in the RSV and the infection was causing dangerous blood pressure changes. The ICU doc came to the hem/onc floor at about midnight and told me they were movng him into the PICU so they could intubate him if he had too much trouble breathingwhen they pumped extra fluids into him. That is the scene that stands out most to me from the finale because it hit so close to home. Thankfully after 3 or 4 people working on my son for about 5 hours, and a blood transfusion, he stabilized and didn't need intubation.
