This is me!

In case you didn't expect that answer to actually fit someone!

Non-lethal (by a long shot) long ago orange belt in Tang So Do (probably can't even spell it right...).

I've taken classes, but I doubt they did much for me :)

My dad gave me all the advice I need for self-defense. There is no honor in self-defense, go low go hard and break every 'rule' you've ever learned regarding fighting. Oh, and don't stop until they are completely out.

I'm not too worried about self-defense anymore, but I needed the advice for high school.

After 9/11 they incorporated self-defense training into our annual recurrent training program, but that's the only exposure I've ever had (unless you also count the "self-defense" moves I learned growing up with a gaggle of brothers - which, incidentally, were proven more helpful in a precarious situation than any of us ever expected them to be).

I did Judo for about 1 1/2 to 2 years. After 6 months to a year of training with Judo, you should be able to defend yourself against anyone, 300 pound football players included. (You use their weight against them!)

I didn't take it for self defense, but it is a good sport for self defense for women and small men. Not only do you use people's weight against them for throws and it's better to be short and small because it's easier to do the throws with a low center of gravity, but you also learn choke holds and arm bars that are very useful against larger, stronger opponents.

After doing it for over a year, it should come back to you. If you only take a short self defense course, the skills are not going to become automatic. Just like phonics or math basics, you need to over learn the skills over a period of time if you expect to recall them years later.

I was taught very well--we were taught to do the movements exactly correct, very slow at first, and only allowed to do them as fast as we could do them correctly. Eventually, you built up to doing them very quickly so that you could get 30 to 60 repetitions of the basic footwork for each move in a minute. We did this for various throws for the first part of practice every day, building up the amount of practice it takes for them to become over-learned and automatic.
