dopeyfav
Has anyone used these together? What is you opinion? How did your dc like them? Does anyone have a schedule to coordinate the two? Thank you.
Beth in SW WA
We are doing Hakim History of US w/ Linwood Thompson's TTC US History lectures next year. I don't have a schedule. They don't align perfectly AND I'll be adding Netlix docs also. For lit, we'll be doing LL American. Sorry I'm not much help. :)
Blessed
I use the books as a spine, about 1 book over about 6 weeks: I read about 2-3 chapters per day and we fold in read alouds/audio books from the library, movies from netflix, cd's from Nest (living principles of America), materials from Vision Forum. etc. So we take our time. I ask for an oral or written narration and/or we go through the multiple choice questions in the History of Us Assessment Book. I also have the History of US Junior High Syllabus and Tests which has great comprehension questions and essay assignments that I plan to use as an open book "final exam" at the end of the year. I plan to get through book 5 for this year and do the remaining 5 books next year, spreading American History out over 2 years. In our next cycle I will require more rhetoric level work using something more advanced but Hakim is a wonderful intro series. Is "TC" Teaching Company? I have not used their materials yet so I don't know how well they go along...might be fine for advanced/upper level children. Ali in OR
We have both of these. History of US we use with Biblioplan. I read it aloud to the girls--they'll get more out of it next time through when they're a bit older. But I think it's great! The TC History of the United States is for me. I've watched all of the lectures that fit the year 3 timeline and I'll watch the rest before teaching year 4. I found it useful to prepare me. I don't think my dd would sit through the whole thing before 7th or 8th grade at least--maybe high school would be better still. The lecturers are great, but this is a course intended for adults. My library had the Linwood Thompson one which is definitely geared to a younger audience. I personally prefer the History of the United States--more content, less gimmicky. I can't help too much with making a course of the two together. My tendency would be to use TC videos as course supplements and always base a course on reading the content, source documents, literature etc.
dopeyfav
I am using Hakim as the base and want to supplement with the TC videos. I have not been able to coordinate them to flow together & was just wondering if anyone else has had success with this. Maybe someone out there will share how they accomplished this!! Peggy in Va
We will be using Hakim (books 1-6) and TTC Early American History: Native Americans through the Forty-Niners this fall with dss (6th & 7th grades). In addition I plan on using the History of US Junior High Syllabus and Tests for comprehension questions and essay assignments, and probably some things from Netflix. I figure in order to cover the 6 books we will need to cover 6 chapters/wk or 1 book in approx 6 weeks. I just received the TTC material yesterday so I haven't had a chance to really take a long hard look at them. However, I did compare the books to the videos (which are broken down into lessons)and it looks like they can be aligned, somewhat. There is a bit of overlap, but again it's doable. For instance: Book 1 - Tape 1, Lessons 1 & 2 Book 2 - Tape 1 Lesson 3-5 & Tape 2 Lesson 6-8 Book 3 - Tape 2 Lesson 9 Book 4 - Tape 2 Lesson 10, Tape 3 Lessons 11-20, Tape 4 Lesson 16-20, and Tape 5 Lesson 21-23 Obviously, I was only looking at the individual books and what each covered, not individual chapters within each book. Also, I do not have book 5 or 6 yet so I couldn't compare them to the tapes. As far as my dss liking the videos, I don't know as they haven't seen them yet. The way I figure it though, for $35 (I bought the tapes used) they can watch while folding laundry or something. Peggy in Va
Where did you purchase the Junior High syllabus and tests? The Teachers Guides for the 1st two books I purchased from Oxford University Press several years ago. Books 3-5 I purchased from either Amazon or Abe Books http://www.abebooks.com/. They run about $18 at Amazon but you can find them used. I also purchased the Black Line Masters (I think Amazon has these but I purchased mine from Abe Books) which includes worksheets and test; however, there is a separate assessment book. Amazon sells it for about $45 but you can probably find it used. http://www.amazon.com/History-US-Assessment-Book-Books/dp/0195153480/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238768941&sr=8-25 Sonlight also sells a Student Questions book for use with the Hakim series http://www.sonlight.com/120-02H.html And, Hewitt Homeschooling Resources also sells History Of US Junior High Syllabus & Tests Third Edition http://www.hewitthomeschooling.com/book/bsingle.asp?i=2852 It takes a bit of work, but if you're looking to buy the TG or Black Line Masters from OUP used, searching by ISBN number is helpful. The ISBN numbers for the Teachers Guides (Middle - High School Level) are: (sorry I don't have them all) Book 1: 0195153510, Book 2: 0195153529; Book 3: 0195153537; Book 4: 0195153545; Book 5: 0195153553; Book 6: 0195153561; Book 7: 019515357X ISBN for the Black line Masters are: (again, sorry I don't have them all) Book 3: 0195129326; Book 4: 9780195129335; Book 5: 0195129342 HTH
