Wendi
We are finishing up Veritas's grammar-stage history cycle this year (6th grade). I think Omnibus is probably too rigorous for us for middle school; I think we'll hold off on things like Plutarch's Lives and Agamemnon for high school. So I'm pondering what to do for 7th and 8th grade, assuming we start a 4-year cycle in 9th grade. (Or if we jump into Omnibus for 10th-12th, to get a 3-year cycle, what will we do for 9th?) So far, I'm thinking... TRISMS History Makers looks fun. So does Winter Promise Adventures in the Sea & Sky. Or how about finding a curriculum that's based on a geography/world cultures theme for the year? (Or piece together my own?) I'd like to do a year of worldview, like Lightbearers or Worldview Academy. But should I wait until 8th, and do some more logic first? Another thing that sounds fun is doing a "history of science" year, using Beautiful Feet's guide and other resources. Also I'm considering doing Literary Lessons from the Lord of the Rings, and really having enough time to dig into it. Or Brimwood Press's program, then just do some other fun history stuff for the rest of the school year. Then worldview the next year? Or History Makers? Has anyone else done something for middle school besides just continuing in the history cycle? Wendi Edited April 2, 2009 by Wendi
FloridaLisa
Has anyone else done something for middle school besides just continuing in the history cycle? Yep! We took a year to study world geography. It was absolutely one of our best years. We used Mapping the World by Heart and added in books and hands-on projects. At the end of the year, my oldest three (5th, 6th and 8th) spent three weeks drawing a map of the world by memory. They are one of our top treasures from our homeschool journey so far. In fact, they are framed in their bedrooms and really pretty enough to hang on their walls for years to come. I'm about to do the geography study with my rising 7th grader for co-op. We'll use Runkle's text for physical geography (more like earth science), add in the student workbook, MTWBH and lots of living books and projects. I mean to finish up with SOTW 4 in 6th grade and then do SL 3+4 which is American History or SL Core 5 which I think is the Eastern Hemisphere.. Wendi
Mapping the World by Heart looks very interesting. I also like the looks of Trail Guide to World Geography. We could have a lot of fun with a geography year, watching travel videos, cooking ethnic foods, doing writing and literature projects keyed into the areas we're studying, etc. Hmmm... Wendi
I appreciate your input. I just proposed the idea of a world geography/cultures theme for next year, and he was very excited! So I think I'll start pulling together something along those lines. I think we'll do Introductory Logic or some other logic program, and I'll continue our casual study of U.S. government with these books from the library. For 8th grade, I am thinking either TRISMS History Makers, or maybe just doing a year of heavy literature, like Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings. Thanks again!
