klmama
My neighbor wants the dc to care for her pets while they are on vacation. Fine. The thing is, she wants to leave the back door unlocked so they can get in. Fine... except that anyone else could get in, too. Would you be okay with this, or would you insist that they lock up and give us a key? If the latter, how would you word it?
Hillary in KS
I'd lock up, and give you a key. No way I'd leave a door unlocked!
HRAAB
I wouldn't be comfortable with leaving my back door unlocked, but I guess the homeowner is assuming that risk. I don't see how you could be responsible if their home is broken into as long you always make sure the door is shut tight when you're done feeding the animals. I would probably ask her if she was comfortable leaving her door unlocked. She must trust you if she's letting you into her house; is she uncomfortable lending you a key? K&Rs Mom
I'd be okay with it (assuming kids are over about 8yo). It's not how I'd handle a vacation, but if someone else is comfortable leaving their house unlocked that's up to them. I assume this is a very close neighbor? So you're going to be within shouting distance if dc need anything anyway.

Greta
Wow, you guys must live in a very different neighborhood . . . or world . . . than I do! :D There is no way I would leave my house unlocked like that, nor is there any way I would want to be responsible for someone else's unlocked house. I think I would phrase it with concern for them, you don't want them to leave their house unlocked and risk it being robbed on your account, something like that? I would say that you'd feel more secure if they would lock the back door and give you a key, which you would be happy to return after their vacation! If anyone else could get in, what's not to say they'll be in there when your kids go to care for the pets? I don't think you have to word it like that at all, but it's possible your neighbours hadn't thought of that.

Tutor
Leaving doors unlocked is very common around here. That said, I would probably go over with my children to be safe or ask for a key. I would probably word it as wanting to be safe than sorry, you never know about kids alone in a strange house, something like that.
klmama
Thanks! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who would have reservations about this!
