Haiku Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I have mentioned this before, but I just wanted to mention it again for those who may be interested. I will be starting grammar with my dd in the fall. She will be in second grade and I will be using Sheldon's Primary Language Lessons. This is not the same as Serl's PLL, but it's the same idea: an old grammar book. It, and its sequel, Advanced Language Lessons, can be had for free through Google Books. I just went through the book and scheduled the lessons for next year; out of 115 lessons, I will be skipping 18 because I think they are too hard or not something I am concerned about teaching my dd. That leaves me with 97 lessons, or 32 weeks of three lessons per week (with a remainder of 1, of course!). I compared the lessons to what is offered in FLL 1/2 and FLL 3 and I am favorably impressed. The book is rigorous yet interesting and friendly, and it is completely secular. I just wanted to throw this out there for other budget-conscious families. Tara Quote
3lilreds in NC Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Thanks, Tara! I do love looking at old books. Quote
sweetfeet Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Did you have these printed or are you using them online? I can easily do the online way because my computer is on our homeschool table, but was wondering about the cost of printing. I'm still going through and reading PLL, but as a FLL user I like this a lot more. I think that FLL goes too slowly and is far too repetitive for Sophie's liking. She's very good at retaining the info and doesn't need the amount of review in FLL. PLL looks like it moves along at a faster pace. I think I'll figure out where we are in PLL and switch over today. Haiku Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 I know that when I called Kinko's and one of the Office stores (Depot, Max, Staples, whatever) and asked how much it would cost to print, double-sided, and bind the book, it was somewhere between $12 and $18. I think we'll do most of it just putting the page up on the computer screen. Tara Quote

I was thinking of either three hole punching it and shoving it in a binder or spiral binding. And dumbest question ever would be how do they get the file? Would I put it on my jump drive? Did you get my last pm? :tongue_smilie: Quote
Lovedtodeath Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Sounds like something I would like to pick and choose from. I looked at the old PD readers and there are some good things in those too. Quote
cworthy Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Thank you for posting this. I am looking at the advanced version now and this will definitely be helpful to us. Quote
Nikita Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 how do you actually see the content of the books? When I click on the links in the original message, all I get is the TOC, not even a preview? Quote
sweetfeet Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 how do you actually see the content of the books? When I click on the links in the original message, all I get is the TOC, not even a preview? If you are viewing a single page at a time, which I believe is the default, then you can either scroll down or locate the right and left arrows on the blue bar between page number and search. Quote
Nikita Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks Sweetfeet, but I'm not even seeing a single page. Just the Table of Contents listed below, with none of it clickable. And when I search for the book by title, every edition comes up saying No Preview Available. What am I doing wrong? Nikita Quote
Haiku Posted April 3, 2009 Author Posted April 3, 2009 Nikita, I go to books.google.com, I type Sheldon's Primary Language Lessons into the search bar, and it's the first thing that comes up. I click on the link and it takes me to the first page, and I can scroll through all the pages. On the right there is the option to download the pdf file. Maybe you could try that? Tara Quote
Karen sn Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks for posting these links. BEAUTIFUL books. Makes me want to smell the originals. I love old books. Quote
Nikita Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks Tara. I did exactly as you described and still can't see or download any of it. I did manage to get a limited preview of the Advanced Language Lessons (ie, I can see it but can't download). I wonder if it is because I am in Canada? I wouldn't think that would make any difference since it's so old it can't be copyrighted anymore. Oh well, thanks for all your help! Nikita Quote
Haiku Posted April 3, 2009 Author Posted April 3, 2009 PM me your email address and I will email you the pdf file! Tara Quote
Angel Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Just wanted to add that Intermediate Language Lessons by Serl is available at Google Books. I don't know why they have that and not PLL but, thought some of you might like to know. Quote
Ohdanigirl Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks, I'll check it out...Also, for those that are interested the yahoo AO group has free copywork on a=many books that you can choose from. Danielle Quote

Nikita Google Books is not available for download outside the USA. That said, it is the public domain the english speaking countries and would be legal for someone to email the pdf file to you. You also might want to try the internet archive I think you would be able to download there. http://www.archive.org. Quote
Ohdanigirl Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Any chance I can get the PDF too? Pretty please with a cherry on top.:D Quote
Haiku Posted April 4, 2009 Author Posted April 4, 2009 I can't upload the pdfs here because they are too big. Anyone who wants the pdf, pm me your email address and I will send it to you. Tara Quote
Nikita Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Thanks to all of you!! I did manage to get the pdf of Sheldon's Advanced Language Lessons (which is the one I wanted) from the other link by searching at http://www.archive.org. I had to click on the "All Files: HTTP" link which gave me direct access to the PDF file (clicking on the "PDF on Google.com" link just gave me the same info page as going directly into Google Books.) I was also able to get the Serl Intermediate Language Lessons in the same way. So thanks again to all of you for your help :-) Nikita Quote
