Closeacademy
I am looking at science for this next year and am wondering if I have things right. If we do: NEM 4 then science should be Physics NEM 3 then Chemistry NEM 2 then Biology NEM 1 then Physical or General SM PM 6 is General So I still have two years of "fun" science? Right? Or what should we do to fill in or prepare for a general science/PM 6 year? Basically if we are doing: SM PM 4 we need to do _______________ for science and SM PM 5 we need to do _______________ If we do BJU for the upper levels is there any sciece that we shouldn't miss that preps for it? Or what other great curriculum should we be looking at for a science major? Christian or secular is fine with us. My dd wants to be a scientists and from talking to her she will probably major in physics or engineering. Thanks.:bigear:
KAR120C
NEM 4 then science should be Physics NEM 3 then Chemistry NEM 2 then Biology NEM 1 then Physical or General SM PM 6 is General So I still have two years of "fun" science? Right? Or what should we do to fill in or prepare for a general science/PM 6 year? Basically if we are doing: SM PM 4 we need to do _______________ for science and SM PM 5 we need to do _______________ The science curricula you can get at www.singaporemath.com matches up to the math pretty well... but their scope and sequence is rather different from US scope and sequence, which should be considered if she's planning on a science major... If you wanted, and if your kid was up to it, I think you could run the science a little early -- their middle school curriculum (Interactive something - the title has changed since I bought ours) could be run concurrent with SM PM 5 I think if you're prepared to do a little math-explaining for a couple chapters. That would give you: PM4 - whatever you want PM5 - Interactive 1 PM6 - Interactive 2 NEM1 - Biology Matters NEM2 - Chemistry Matters NEM3 - Physics Matters We're in Interactive 2 right now, so I'm not speaking from experience after that point, but I do have and have looked through the Biology, Chemistry and Physics books. Chemistry labs are going to need a lot of tweaking, but I like the look of the other two. The only thing I'd add is that Singapore is not strong on vocabulary compared to US texts, and I think I'd supplement that for high school. Either that, or switch to a US text starting at high school... but I do like the critical thinking of the Singapore science texts. Are you thinking you'll hit NEM4 at her senior year? or earlier? If you want to get to calculus I'm thinking you might consider compacting NEM3 and 4 and adding in the New Additional Math (again, not from experience here yet!) so you can get to calculus by 12th grade. I've read on the singaporemath forums that NEM4 is heavy on review and parts can be skipped or compacted... but we're not there yet ourselves so I'll defer to someone else on that! :)
Closeacademy
Thanks. I will take a look at those programs. We are looking at doing NEM 4 and Physics Sophmore year of high school. I had planned to have her take upper level math/science at the local community college or look for a good calculus course and do advanced courses for chemistry and physics at home. :001_smile:

I'd still probably supplement the vocabulary a bit though if you use Singapore's science for high school work. We're starting Biology Matters next year and my thought was to add in the SAT2 practice book to get it tied back to the US sequence just a little bit.
