Recommendations of things to do in Cincinatti area?

Recommended Posts

We have 3 kids between the ages of 5 and 10 and we will be stopping over in Cincinnatti (did I spell that right? LOL) on the way there and back. Any recommendations of kid-friendly stuff we can do. We don't have time for the Creation Museum and we have already been to the Aquarium.

Any other recommendations? What about anything to do with the underground railroad?

Thanks!

:confused1: My ds wanted me to put that in!

The Cincinnati Zoo is very well done. They have a special breeding program for cheetahs and have a cheetah encounter program where you get to see a bunch of their wild cats and watch a couple of the cheetahs run (seasonal, doesn't run in the winter) They have reciprocal agreements with some zoos and aquariums.

Museum Center has several different museums as well as traveling exhibits.

Children's Museum - I really like this children's museum. There is a lot to do and it is very hands on friendly. There is a small water area so you might want to bring an extra shirt.

History Museum - History of Cincinnati area from Native American to pioneer to turn of the century. Large section on Cincinnati during WWII. Scale model of turn of the century downtown area. Lots of large scale exhibits with reconstructions of a cabin or a shop or a work area. There are frequently costumed interpreters.

Natural History Museum - Cincinnati has a lot of geological natural history with fossils and caves and minerals. There is a large ice cave and ice age section. (This museum has reciprocal agreements with some science museums.)

If you like books, there are lots of book reading and buying opportunities. The Ohio Bookstore is downtown (large, but mostly adult collection. The children's section does have some treasures). Half Priced Books has 3-4 branches in the area and gives teacher discounts to homeschoolers (I show my HSLDA card but any homeschool id or paperwork will work). The Hamilton County Library is fantastic and the downtown branch is really something. If there is an out of print book you've been wanting to see, give them a try. They have partially closed stacks so you may have to request a specific book from the librarian (I actually think this is sort of cool). They also have a vast genealogy section. (The library also has a monthly booksale at a warehouse. We've gotten great books here in the past but I don't know if they're still selling kids books because of CPSIA.)

Hamilton County Parks also has very nice parks. There are a couple with big wooden playground structures. There are others with very nice hikes. The naturalist programs are well run. Check out Winton Woods, Sharon Woods and Farbach-Warner especially for naturalist programs.

We love vacationing in cincy. We like to spend a day in Newport (there is an awesome pizza place there, lots of shopping, barnes and nobles, and the aquarium...we also like being by the river.) The zoo is a favorite also. They have certain times of the day when you can feed the giraffes! For something fun, we also really had a great time at Coney Island park last year. It is a small amusement park with a water park...wouldn't be good unless it is summer though.

I hear the children's museum is really nice, but we haven't been there yet.
