I'd love some encouragement from others that are on a weight loss journey... (cc)

Recommended Posts

So as I sit here typing this, I am wearing a pair of jeans that hasn't seen the light of day in YEARS.

I have lost 26 pounds since the first of the year. We got the kids a Wii Fit for Christmas, and that was the last straw. Seeing my Mii, all big and bloated; how sad.

The Lord had been dealing with me for a while about my weight. I needed to get some self-control, and to set a good example for my boys. I made sure they eat healty, but for some reason, I didn't hold myself to the same standard. Anyway, it was just time, ykmiw? I'm tired of being fat. I want to be a good mom and wife, in all respects. And this was one area that I was not doing my best in. I've struggled with weight and eating habits since childhood; I eat for comfort. But the Lord is my Comforter now! I'm just so thrilled!

So, I made a commitment to eating healthy, and being active. And it's been fantastic so far. I mean, it's hard work, but I feel great! My dh is so supportive. He never had a negative thing to say about my appearance, but he's enjoying the change, ya know? And I've been learning loads about how to eat healthy, which of course rubs off on dh and kids, since I do the cooking. It's just been great.

I've got 19 more pounds to lose, then I'll be back to my weight that I was when I got pregnant with Zee. (Um, yeah, I realize that means I've been carrying baby weight for almost 6 years, but let's not talk about the past. :tongue_smilie:) I'm just so happy, and excited, and I feel great. And I KNOW that there are others on here going through the same thing. So please, share your story, tell us what you're doing...

You're doing a great job! It takes time to ingrain new habits.

I've been carrying the "baby fat" for 21 years. :blushing: I finally decided that enough is enough. I have no reason to be "extra fluffy" so I started eating healthier this year, too. I've lost 28 lbs since January. I have a LOT more to go, though. My Mii is going to be bloated for a long time!

Sometimes I think the self-control lies more in what we buy to keep in the house versus what we eat in general. I mean, why keep thin mints in the house if you know they're a temptation? I've found that if I keep my fridge and pantry full of good stuff, that's what I'll eat. If I keep to the eating schedule (every 3 hours) then I don't get super hungry and eat junk food, or worse, go out and GET junk food!

Keep going! By summer, you'll be svelte and hawt! :D

A woman on the Weight Watcher's board has great, direct wisdom: losing weight is hard...being fat is hard...choose your hard.

What I have discovered is that I am consumed (no pun intended) by food and weight issues. When I am on track for a healthy life and weight at least that pre-occupation is positive.

Given some of the references in your post, this link my also help you:

I lost 15 lbs. in 14 months on WW. I didn't have a ton to lose, but I was traveling down a road of rapid weight gain and I wanted to quit before I got into too much trouble. Now that I'm at goal, I'm finding it easy to slip back into old habits. One thing I've learned is to "pick myself up, dust myself off and start over again tomorrow (or the next meal, or right now!)" I tend to have the mentality of "Well, I've blown it, then just forget it! Gimme the Oreos!" My weight loss has been frustrating, but I'm glad it took so long because I am developing eating habits that are better. My problem isn't unhealthy meals or overeating at meals, it's nibbling and snacking and getting into the chocolate chips when I'm frustrated. I do a lot of emotional eating. But, I'm learning and working at it, and learning to not let my failures get in the way of the big picture.

I commit to walking 3 times this week. Wish plantar faciitis and a bad knee, this will be an accomplishment.

WHO'S WITH ME?

ME! I need to get out and do more. I am HUGE for me. I am not just saying that. In the last 4 yrs I have gained 70 lbs. Wow that was hard to type. I feel horrible, I look horrible and I really need to do something about it.

First...congratulations to you! Way to go...keep it up! We all watch The Biggest Loser every week and it has inspired me to finally lose the "baby weight". After 7 kids...well...let's just say I am carrying more weight than I ever had. I've lost 10 lbs. in a month and have been exercising more. Here is something encouraging that my friend told me yesterday: When you are tempted to eat something "not so healthy" (cookies, doughnuts, cakes, chips, etc.) just tell yourself this: "That _______ will never taste as good as thin feels".

:iagree: The key is to eat every 3 hrs. the RIGHT foods.

I also use a smaller dinner plate than my family. I use the salad plate for my dinner and no seconds. I've gone from bulging size 16 to size 12 since last summer.

South Beach Diet guidelines have been a big help to me.

Way to Go!! That is so awesome!

I really need to lose 30 pounds myself. That much would put me just below what I was before I got pregnant the first time. I have reflux issues and was having some reactions to the medication and am trying to make it without any. I know losing the weight would help that as well.

Can I ask how you have been eating healthy? What is a typical day's list of foods like for you?

I know a big thing for me is my activity level, even though we have a few things around the house that would help (stationary bike, indoor trampoline, dance pads for computer and playstation, etc.).

First of all, I want to thank you ladies for the encouragement. :)

As far as what I eat...

I eat five times a day. 8am, 10:15am, 12:30pm, 2:45pm, and 5pm.

Breakfast is about 500 cal.

morning snack is 150 cal.

lunch is 300 cal.

afternoon snack is 150 cal.

Dinner is not as easily calorie-counted.

I find it easy to count calories for everything except dinner. Dinner is the one meal that we all eat together as a family. I mean, me and the boys eat breakfast and lunch together, but we don't all eat the same thing. I fix whatever we each want, which I find makes it easier for me to control exactly what I eat, if that makes sense. I pack breakfast and lunch for dh to take to work.

For dinner, I eat whatever we're all having. For example, pot roast with potatoes and carrots. But, the big difference is that I will quit eating when I am still a little hungry. Before, I would eat until I felt nice and full. Plus, I would have a snack at around 8:30 once the kids were in bed. I don't eat anything after dinner now.

I also quit drinking pop, which I used to drink every day. That was HARD.

So, I figure that if I get 1100 calories before dinner, then I'm probably getting around 15-1600 calories total for my day. Which is plenty. But, it's also (sadly) about half of the calories that I must have been eating before, based on what I would need to eat to maintain my starting weight.

To be honest, I am hungry a lot. But, I'm ok with that. I didn't expect losing weight to be easy. It's certainly not as easy as gaining it. :)

Basically, It's hard work, but the Lord told me that it was time. And, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. :)

Good Job Bethany!!

After shopping yesterday I decided I really need to do something about my weight.

I hated trying on clothes and seeing what I looked like :ack2:

I don't know what to do though(that's my problem). I guess I should start simple(no more pop, which I have done before) and go from there.

It's so hard.

Might have to check out a weigh watchers meeting or something like that.

I need all the help I can get.

I've lost 18 lbs. I've been eating when I'm hungry, but healthy snacks and trying to slow down at meals so that the "fullness" registered. I've been recording FitTV's Diet Doctor and they mentioned it takes 20 minutes to register fullness.

I've been trying to excercise. I walk 2 miles and at times also ride my stationary bike 35 minutes.

The challenge is to keep it all going. Some days it's hard to fit in the exercise and I did something to my hip that was making me sore.

I was within normal range on my WiiFit but towards the top of normal, now I'm a little below mid normal. I'd like to lose just a little more (I've always been tall and thin - at least when younger) but at least want to maintain.

I feel like I was working so hard at it that I'm afraid the with the slow down things could creep up again and I do NOT want that to happen.

I'm happy to be back in clothes I haven't been able to wear, etc.

I also don't want the holiday to throw me off. Sometimes I feel as if the days I allow myself some less than perfect food could lead to a downhill slide.

Any keys from anyone on keeping it permanent??

I've been working on changing my eating habits, but I haven't started walking yet. Three times this week? I can do that. I think it's time to get the Wii back from the Young Man this week, too.

I wanna be a Well-Trained Loser! :tongue_smilie: Lordy, that sounds odd...

I too have struggled with weight. We got the Wii Fit game several months ago, and at first I used it quite a bit, but I haven't taken it out in a while.

I got really sick the first week of March, and lost about 10 lbs or so - of course not the good way - but was finally able to get into a pair of old jeans. The weight came back quickly (I knew it would, since I barely ate that week), but I was able to get it down to almost where it was near the end of the flu.

I don't really calorie count any more, though. What I have done is try to increase my exercise some, and just cut back on portions. A few weeks ago I started taking Zumba classes once a week, and last week started going for a walk with a friend of mind. (Thursday we were so lost in conversation we went to far, missed where we were supposed to turn around, and ended up walking 8 miles round trip!)

Here is a site that I have found pretty great, and is free:

The exercise is the key for me! It also won't hurt that I snuck all the sweets into my dh's duffle bag this morning as he headed back to the ranch.

The other key for me is to STAY AWAY from white flour and sugar! If I eat even one little bit of white flour or sugar, the very strong cravings immediately hit me! I feel so much better eating veggies, fruits, whole grains, and just a little bit of protein every now and then.

I did an hour of 'free step' on the Wii this morning; three twenty minute sessions. I did a total of 7000 steps! Woo HOO!

Over Easter weekend, I just aimed to maintain my weight, and not worry about losing. I'm back on the 'band wagon' this morning. :)

So far, I've lost 28 pounds this year. I'm shooting for 45 total by the end of our school year, which is June 19. That will be all my baby weight. Which, now that I really think about it, means that I need to lose 17 pounds in the next two months. Lofty goal, I guess, but that's about 2 pounds a week. And hopefully the added exercise will give me the boost I need. Dh says he'll take me out for a steak dinner when I reach my goal. That's seems ironic to me... :glare:

Then I will start working on the 'weight I gained in the ten months between getting married and getting pregnant'. LOL. I tell ya, I think I gained 10 lbs just while on our honeymoon! All that good food in Las Vegas, combined with having practically starved myself to look good in that wedding dress...

But, I digress. My plan is to do 60 minutes of 'free step' at least 4 times a week. I really dislike exercise. But, I figure I dislike being fat even more. :)

I am so happy I found this thread again! you ladies are such an inspiration!!

I'm fighting a cold and a slight sore throat this morning but I am determined to do Wii Fit - I haven't done it in a few days and I always feel so much better when I work out.

Food - eating - meals - snacks....that's where I struggle.

How far does everyone walk? I will be doing this with my little one, since dh is not home every other week.

and I try for 20,000 steps a day. I also do Callanetics every other day. The dvd I use and really like is called Callanetics Evolution. I have lost 17.5 pounds since the beginning of the year. I really think Callanetics has done good things for me. The other day as I stepped out of the shower my husband said "Holy @#$!" (It was the good kind of Holy @#$% not the negative kind ;)).

I started off with WW but now I just try to eat well. If I really want something I have a small bit of it. I am really enjoying healthy food. A nice book is I Can Make You Thin. It has a lovely relaxation cd in it that I have found surprisingly helpful.

Best of luck - here is a link to a gal's one month before and after pics using Callanetics. (It is not me btw!)

There's nothing like seeing your round Mii to make you want to cry. Or the Wii asking you why you gained 2 pounds since yesterday:glare:. (My Wii Fit is now on my hit list.) My baby will be two next month, so I'm past the point where I can call this baby weight. I go so sick and tired of my flubber that I decided to do something about it. I started Medifast about a week and a half ago and have lost 5 lbs. I needed an idiot-proof program. I know that I just need to eat right and exercise, but that is just too vague for me. So far I'm ok, though the last 2 days have been a bit trying with all the chocolate and potatoes in the house. It is really hard for me to accept the fact that I cannot lose 50lbs in 2 weeks. It took me a long time to put on all this weight and it may take a while to get it all off. Most importantly, I have to keep telling myself that I am worth it. As I was staring at the yummy scalloped potatoes my dh was reheating for lunch today, I had to tell myself that I was worth more than the potatoes. When my kids are eating their chocolate, I tell myself I am worth more than those oh so yummy Reece's penut butter cups. It's tough, but I am determined to be successful.

Good luck to all of you in your weight loss journey. We should start a thread so we can update each other about our progress.

I started Medifast this am too. I agree, idiot proof and easy is what I need to at least jump start my weight loss. I've lost on this before and only gained back because I completely through moderation to the wind. It works and, for me, is the way to go.

It takes some time to lose weight. It is not impossible though. Follow the plan and never give up. After a few months, there is bound to be some significant development.

I'd like to lose another 25 pounds. Here's what I did:

Exercise:

Dh & I walked for 30 minutes every morning, covering about a mile going up & down our long, steep driveway. We had to stop when the weather got cold & rainy, but we're about to start back. I expect that will help me with that other 25 pounds.

Diet:

I didn't count calories or weigh or measure anything, but I ate small portions and pretty much eliminated sweets.

With plantar faciitis and a bad knee, this will be an accomplishment.

Just wanted to encourage you, I have lost 15 pounds since the first of the year and one of the most notable differences is that I no longer have symptoms of plantar fasciitis.... I have started to do some jogging so I am waiting to see if it will come back, but I do believe taking off weight has made a tremendous difference!

I joined WW in January, deciding that this would be my last weight loss attempt. I have to be successful, no matter what it takes. At that point, I had 79 lbs. to lose before I reach the top of my healthy weight range, and would love to make it an even 100. I have lost 15ish lbs. and lately have been struggling with complacency.

So since you asked for encouragement, I'll tell you what I did. I dug out a picture of my grandma, who died at 51 of a massive heart attack, and put it on my fridge. I recommitted to getting healthy so I don't have to deprive my grandkids of their grandma someday, or my kids of their mother when they're my age, or my husband of his wife when we've just gotten ready to enjoy our life together without kids at home.

I've lost 30 pounds since last July with the following life changes:

1. Walking more. I bought myself a pedometer last summer and was horrified to learn that without effort, I walked a measly 2500 steps a day on average. I've gotten to the point that I regularly work in 7000. Hope to take that up to 10,000 during this coming summer.

2. Core Exercising. Literally. I have a book by Peggy Brill entitled The Core Program and it takes just 15 minutes in the morning (after learning the exercises) to work on firming/toning core muscles, arms and legs. Very doable, with three levels of workout. I am up to the second level. :-)

3. Following the principles of the NoS diet (http://www.nosdiet.com) which translates to 1. No Sweets, 2. No Seconds, and 3. No Snacks except on S days (weekends and holidays). This outlines (and the website goes into more detail) a wonderfully sane and doable "way of eating" that builds excellent eating habits for a lifetime approach to weight management.

I am finally free of fear regarding eating and gaining weight. I know that I will never gain again because I have the right tools for life.

What a great thread. Well done, eveyone.

I have lost about 45 pounds since early December primarily through just changing the way I eat. I eat lots of salads and vegetables, and I usually make fresh juice for breakfast which I find really filling. I've cut down on meat (but not cut it out) and dairy, and I drink a lot of water. For snacks I eat raw almonds and brazil nuts, or fruit. I rarely allow myself to be hungry because I know that it will tempt me to eat something I shouldn't, so I fill up on nuts or fruit.

The amazing thing is that I have found that my tastes have changed. Things that I thought I could never give up (like cheese) I now don't even want or enjoy. I don't eat much bread anymore but have replaced 'normal' bread with organic sourdough loaf which I make into salad sandwiches sometimes. I think that my main key has been cutting out sweets, take away, and processed foods, and replacing them with lots of fresh veges.

Now if I could only get some consistent exercise going....

I have found this thread inspiring, and encouraging. I just lost 3 pounds and have 33 to go. I just started my diet exercise program about a week and a half ago. There is some helpful advice found in this thread, and I am going to try to follow some of it. I liked the 20,000 steps a day idea. I used to have a pedomoter, but it broke, and I have yet to find another one that works like it did. I have found myself sitting much more than I used too, so I am working hard on that. Now, if I could start counting those steps. I am walking an hour a day, and that is a good start, but sitting too much during other times is what I am working on. The wii personal fitness coach is working out nicely. It suggest I work out 30 minutes, but I feel more comfortable with 45 now. I tottaly cut out white flour, sugar, dairy except yogurt, corn, and processed foods. Keep all those good tips comming.
