Combining CW Homer and R&S grammar

My 11 yo son will be starting CW Homer in July. I would like to use R&S with it instead of Harvey's. Is there a particular level of R&S that seems to fit particularly well with Homer? In other words, should I order R&S 6 just because he will be in 6th grade OR is it possible that one of the other levels (5th - 8th) coordinates better with Homer?

Background: He has completed R&S 2 & 3 and JAG, so he has had plenty of exposure to diagramming with JAG. I am not afraid to "skip" levels in R&S.

Thank you!

Jetta

I would go w/the level of R&S that suits the current abilities of your ds. I find R&S 5 to be a good foundational text. I never worried about whether or not R&S dovetailed with the lessons in CW Homer. If we came to a section my dd was not familiar with, I would go as far as she was able, and move on. You can always revisit these topics once your dc have covered them in R&S.

We're doing CW and I'm planning to ditch Harvey and go for R&S this coming year. Will we need something extra for diagramming (starting with R&S for grade 5)? Up to the time when we started Homer I had a fuzzy idea what diagramming was (from the WTM) and since Harvey is so weak on it I tought myself from the internet, but a proper book would be better.

There is a LOT of diagramming in R&S! We just started CW Older Beginners in February. Be aware that they use different grammatical terms than R&S does. We do the CW exercises, but use the R&S terms because we have used R&S since we started homeschooling 3 years ago.

To the OP...I don't know what JAG is, but there is a pretty significant difference between R&S 5 and R&S 6.

We are using R&S with CW without any problems. If CW covers something that we haven't gotten to (or covered at the beginning of the year and need a refresher!) we just look up that lesson in R&S.

HTH!:)

H.S.,

So R&S 6 is a big step up from R&S 5? Do you think R&S 5 covers most of the grammar in CW Homer? Which level are you using right now with Homer?

Thanks for helping,

Jetta

P.S. JAG is Junior Analytical Grammar.

We are using CW Older Beginners. My DD14 is in R&S level 8 and my DS10 is in R&S level 5. The diagramming that we have completed at this point is right on level with R&S level 5. I don't know how CW Homer A & B have the diagramming set up, but I do know that in the Homer Core, for where we are, the diagramming is on par with R&S level 5.

We just started CW in February. DS has been using R&S since September, so that may effect our experience with the level of diagramming.

Also, just a side note in case you are not aware of this, CW uses the old grammatical terms that Harvey's does. CW does tell you on pages 189 & 193 of the Homer Core that Subject Complement is the same as Predicate Noun/Predicate Nominative or Predicate Adjective, BUT (and this was a big one for DD who knows nothing but R&S grammatical terms) all of the directions they give to the student tell you to diagram the SC (subject complement).

HTH! :)
