Omma
I will be using TOG Y1 next year and was wondering if I should purchase the Usborne Internet-Linked Ancient History Encyclopedia if I already have the white Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World and The Usborne Book of World History and The Usborne Book of World History Dates. I can check this book out of the library, but it looks like it may be used all year. What do you think? My dc are ages 9 (UG) and 7 (LG). Thanks! Omma
Oh, and I also want to get SOTW 1 with the activity guide (I think!). We have done ancients once already, even though my dc are so young, and that was when we used CHOW and Usborne's Book of World History, PLUS we used MOH 1 that year. I am tempted by Illuminations, but since we did MOH 1 last time around, I am thinking I want to use SOTW 1 this time. So many spines! bettyandbob
The study guide to SOTW has both of those in the supplemental reading--citing page numbers to go with each chapter. So, you should be able to use the SOTW activity guide and match up your supplemental reading. Even if you can't my response would be no. I see the texts you've listed as a bit redundant, so I wouldn't buy another. I haven't used TOG, so I'm basing my answer on my approach to history. I would go through the materials I have and just figure out the supplemental reading myself. I use SOTW with my own schedule and have tons of supplemental reading that I've just pulled from my own home library. I also ad in resources I know are in my public library. Some may be things that have been mentioned in WTM, but many are just good resources that don't happened to have been mentioned. My approach means I spend a lot of time late spring/early summer planning the next years history based on texts I already own. If you want to convenience of just following the plan exactly as TOG lays out, then yes you need to buy another encyclopedia. That convenience factor has value. You need to decide if that's what you need.
kalanamak
How old is your child? Usborne covers the "younger set" better and Kingfisher the opposite, IMO.
