Janna
I was at Half Price Books a couple of days ago. On their "First Edition/Rare books" shelf was a copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird". They were asking $40. I almost bought it, but didn't because Dh who was with me said no. So I've been looking online at the price for this and they are about $30,000. So I'm thinking, "Um, I need to get back to the store and buy that $40 one. I don't think they realize what they have!" Well, I just called to see if it had sold, and if not, to see if they could hold it. The clerk says they still have it, but it's not actually a 1st edition. He says it's a copy of the first edition for the book collectors who can't afford or find the actual 1st edition. So it's the same dust jacket, and they have it in cardboard-type collectors box, but it doesn't actually say First Edition on the copyright page. I think these are still somewhat hard to find, though (?). So is it worth buying at $40, or should I just buy a modern copy for less that $5? Btw, the very bottom of the dust jack on the spine is ripped. Otherwise, it's in perfect condition. I'm debating on driving over there now before they close, though they are holding it for me for 24 hours. I should tell you that my 10 month old's name is Atticus and I've been searching for a good copy for him since he was born. So what say you? Brenda in FL
I should tell you that my 10 month old's name is Atticus and I've been searching for a good copy for him since he was born. So what say you? Given this - I just might buy this edition and keep watching out for a first edition - It'll be some years before he can appreciate it anyway! latinteach
You can buy a slipcase 1st edition reproduction edition of To Kill a Mockingbird new on Amazon for $26, so don't pay $40. ISBN 0061205699 I was at Half Price Books a couple of days ago. On their "First Edition/Rare books" shelf was a copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird". They were asking $40. AuntieM
that given Atticus, a nice reproduction first edition is worth obtaining so you'll have *something*. Then keep on the lookout for a real first edition - you never know what will turn up at a garage sale!
Janna
Ok, I called Half Priced Books and asked more about it (specifically the ISBN number and publisher, how they do their pricing and is this still being printed). I was told that it does not have an ISBN, the publisher is First Edition Libraries and that it is made mainly for nostalgic purposes. It is for book collectors who don't have the money to buy a true First Edition and for maybe teachers who want to teach about the art on the cover as they discuss the book and all it involves. I did a little research and am only able to find used copies of this, for about $80 (though there is one on ebay for $34, but with shipping it will be more than the $40 at 1/2 Price Books). So far, it doesn't appear that I could buy a new copy of this particular reproduction. I asked the clerk at the store if this was still somewhat "rare" and he said that they don't get it in their store often at all. So, since I have been looking for a special copy of this book for the cutie pie shown in my avatar, I am going to buy it. To have an actual First Additon would put me in a state of panic anyway - It would have to be insured, I would never want him to touch it, LOL.... So really, this is the next best thing. Thanks to you who replied!

So what say you? I have an Atticus too.:D I think finding a special copy is important. I would buy the $40 copy if it is special to you. I have been on the hunt for a good copy myself. I think having the ultra rare first edition wouldn't be as nice because I would never let anyone touch it.
