kids&me
I have been looking over My Fathers World, Exploration to 1850 for my 8yo ds. I can not find where the student readers are. I am not sure if they are showing student readers or read alouds. Is there any other student reading list that I am not seeing? Thank you, Angie
Wendy in ME
From what I understand, the students read from the Book Basket. The only fiction scheduled are the read alouds.
dhudson
There are no "readers" per se. The book basket books are the independent readers. Are your children reading fluently? I have them read either a history book or the Bible readings out loud to check on reading skills and comprehension but since they can read fluently I have not used "readers". robbie
He is still reading out loud to me because we are working on fluency. His comprehension is excellent, and he can figure out most words. This year we have been using SL LA 2 regular. This is our first year homeschooling... Thanks! Angie
dhudson
Instead of Exp to 1850 you might want to check out MFW's Adventures program. It covers the same basic time frame and is designed for a younger audience. It also has more books designed for the more beginner reader which he could read out loud to you. Unless you have other older children you are hs'ing, I think you might want to look at Adventures. I've done both programs and I can say that my youngers ones enjoyed Adventures and it moved at a speed they could handle. EXP is heavier which is why MFW recommends that younger siblings use the expansion books which are basically the Adventures program.
robbie
Thanks for clarifying that... it makes more sense. I'll check out Adventures. Blessings, Angie
Donna A.
Angie, just chiming in to say that I agree with the recommendation for Adventures. It'll be more age-appropriate for your son, and also easier for you to adapt to teaching with MFW. Expl-1850 is intended for an older audience. Besides, Adventures is just a FUN year. ;)
cbollin
In the back of the teacher's manual after the "book basket list", there is an additional list of classics in children's literature that you can use for readers. Since all kids will be at different levels of reading, the list is arranged by reading level to let you pick and choose what works for your child. You can just use library for them or purchase. Book basket is for reading related to history/science/music topics. Then the general reading list is for other reading. -crystal
kids&me
Thank you. I wasn't sure if I was missing the reading list online. Good to know they do provide a reading list. My ds is finishing SOTW vol 2 and he is also using SL regular 2 readers this year. I can't decide between MFW or Tapestry for the next school year! I really wish there was a bookstore I could actually look at everything. Programs are so different when you get them in your hands! Thank you for the input everyone ! Now that I have looked over MFW I wished I had started with them because I think the Ancients were a little much for my son....but now we are though the heavy stuff. He is so interested in early America. Do you think starting MFW Expl-1850 is to much after what he has already been doing? Hope I am making sense?! dhudson
Adventures will stay in the general time frame and having done Exp this year with 3rd graders (who have been through all the extra Adventure materials) I would still say that Exp will be too heavy. In MFW's master plan, your child will get the time frame again when they go through the history cycle so your child would go through EXP when they are older and better able to handle it.
