Rhonda in TX
DH is giving up nightshade foods in an effort to help his back pain. He says it's helping, so I guess we're in this for awhile. So, now I need some recipes. He is avoiding: tomatoes peppers (all kinds except black pepper) paprika chili powder eggplant (not a problem 'cause he doesn't like it) potatoes I'd like some recipes that I don't have to manipulate. i.e. I'm not interested in making tomato sauce from beets. :001_smile: Just about all of my recipes contain something from that list. I just need a few recipes. He's fine with fixing himself something else while I cook our regular dishes for the rest of the family. However, I'd like to have some recipes that don't require him to do that. He's already shot down beef stroganoff and swedish meatballs. He doesn't like sour cream or creamy dishes. I don't typically cook fish, but I'm willing to try. Oh, and he says beef gives him a headache. He will eat it occasionally, though. Can anybody help? Jean in Newcastle
Asian food tends to be tomato and potato free. Just choose non-spicy kinds that don't have chili peppers in it. You could do chicken and dumplings. Meat loaf without ketchup. Can he have sweet potatoes or yams? I think that yams at least are a different food family but you should check. You can do yam fries, mashed yams, and even yams in a "Potato" salad.
klmama
What if you just tried sticking to meats and veggies for awhile? You could broil, bake, grill, pan-fry, etc. Soups would work, as long as you made them from scratch to avoid the nightshade plants.
Rhonda in TX
I'll check out Asian food recipes. And yes, he can have sweet potatoes. I've never fixed them, but I guess I could start. :) Thanks for the suggestions.
Rhonda in TX
He would be happy with that, and I'm sure I will. This could be a permanent change, though. Fun, fun.

Our favorite way is to peel them, cut 'em into 1" or so chunks, toss them in olive oil and salt and pepper (and I like cumin too - can your Dh have cumin) and roast them at 400 for about 40 minutes. Crispy outside and creamy inside. OH! So. Good.:tongue_smilie:
Marylou
You can buy a cookbook that has 100% nightshade free recipes here: http://noarthritis.com/cookbook.htm I cannot eat the nightshades. Well, I CAN eat them, I just pay for it with extreme stiffness and pain in all my joints, so I understand your husband's avoidance. I love sweet potatoes, too. They can be prepared in so many delicious ways. You are a sweet wife to look for new recipes for him! I wish you much success.
stripe
Not to sound like an inactive member of the "Cauliflower Fan Club," but I've heard it's sort of potato like when mashed. And I was reading that it's great roasted, too. Clearly I need to try some of these recipes instead of just reading about them! Maybe branch out and try new kinds of meat. Goat, lamb, emu, buffalo, whatever.
GSMP
tomatoes peppers (all kinds except black pepper) paprika chili powder eggplant (not a problem 'cause he doesn't like it) potatoes Wow...I had an anaphalactic allergy to the peppers (cayenne, capcasin etc). I am that way also with chili powder and paprika. I would die with out tomatoes though...I was so afraid my allergy test would show a reaction to that little item. All of my seasonings had to be dumped. I could everything with Mrs Dash's. My husband found the recipe for me and I had to mix my own with out the stuff I was allergic to. MSG is a major one. Red meat giving him headaches could be due to the hormones given to the animals. I have a friend who cannot eat red meat unless it is totally organic. I just finished reading an article on the livestock that inadvertantly feed on nightshade grasses and the problems that evolved from grasses. Maybe there is some link with the red meat. It was really quite good. My husbadn liked the dish. It would take some time to get the kids convinced.
