Heather in Neverland
So about accessing websites.... I've read in other posts about some of you overseas not being able to access certain websites. Can you tell me more about this? Is it regulated by the governement of that country? Or is it a technical issue? What kind of sites can you NOT access? Like, can you still get amazon? Obviously, you still get these boards. What about blogs? Religious sites (I like to go to John Piper and John MacArthur's websites among others for example)? TeacherZee
The short answer is: It depends. The slightly longer answer is: It depends:D Take China for example. There it is the government that decides which sites are allowed and which aren't. Now in other countries it might be the host country/company of the site that decides what you can and can't see. For example I can't watch any tv shows on hulu or nbc or fox because it has to do with licensing rights for the shows. I have yet to find a country where I couldn't access Amazon but some sellers on Amazon won't ship to my location (Target being one of them:glare:). I don't know about religious sites for that you should probably ask someone in Malaysia. Pandora also does not work outside of the US. Amira
Malaysia doesn't block very many sites; at least, it hasn't in the past. And the sorts of sites that are generally blocked in any country (except in extreme examples, like in China) are usually political and specific to the country. The government is the one controlling the blocking. Technical issues are a totally different story though and that will vary from country to country and within the country. I wouldn't worry about not being able to access the sites you want in Malaysia unless you have a bad internet connection.
sgilli3
We have a few sites blocked: generally anything that is considered to be morally, politically or religiously offensive is blocked. I can access everything *I* need to. We have found issues with Amazon ( for eg) who dont deliver here to the UAE, so we had to set up Aramex accounts, with addresses in both the US & UK, so that goods could be couriered from those addresses to here. We arent religious, but our family is, and they have been able to bring religious items into the country with no issues, and are able to attend church here ( there are many, many churches here, of different denominations)

Really? We've ordered from Amazon and aside from stupendously high shipping costs it was fine and we had books in a week. Were you ordering from Amazon or Amazon.uk (or another one)? Flickr is blocked here, which has sometimes been annoying when I'm trying to find a specific photo, but I can usually work around it. Oh, and I was truly sad when they blocked one of the video sites I was using all last year to watch history documentaries; I don't know what happened between last year and this one :( Heather have you found some expat forums for Malaysia? You should be able to get a lot of these country-specific questions answered there...

asta
Google. gmail doesn't always work in Europe; you have to go through a convoluted set of steps to access it. I imagine it would be the same problem all over outside of the US. In Europe, Google has "googlemail", not gmail. asta
Melinda in VT
A very minor thing, but my brother in Kuwait can't play Scrabble with us via Facebook. He can only access the non-US Scrabble and we can only access the US Scrabble. So we play Wordscrapper instead.:D Like I said, very minor.
