A home for their hearts
I just found this at the library and was wondering what people thought of them. They have songs with and without the lyrics. I sometimes go back and forth on lyrics with classical music. I feel instead of really listening and enjoying the masterpieces you get some silly song stuck in your head. I don't know, what do you think?
Chris in VA
Oh, they're ok. It's one of those "Lighten up!" things. So the song gets stuck in your head--the lyrics contain info about the composer (usually) and the tune is from the original composition. It's a bridge to the real thing, and harmless fun. Matryoshka
I admit I refused to buy them (but we did use and love the Classical Kids CDs) - but then someone gave them a Beethoven's Wig CD for their birthday. They loved it. It hasn't harmed them, lol. So I've lightened up. :D
whitestavern
I kind of felt like you, but we now have 3 CDs and the kids have enjoyed them for years. They listen through to hear both w/and w/out the words. Now they are pretty adept at identifying composers when we hear them on the regular radio or at concerts! ccm
We enjoy them. :001_smile: In fact, my college-aged children are home for the weekend and they started singing Kings and Queens of England (Trumpet Tune, Purcell) out of the blue as they were gathered in the kitchen! KIN
We love them here!! I have all 4 CD's. My sons now recognize a lot of classical music - and know who wrote it! Many of the songs have words about the title of the piece or who wrote it. We listen to classical music other than BW, too, but BW is what made them love classical! Jenny in Florida
I mean, I wouldn't attempt to build a curriculum around them, or anything. I don't think of them as "educational," just fun. That said, they are really fun. Our whole family sings the songs.

Jen in PA
My kids love them. I would rather listen to those than to most other music marketed to kids.
newlifemom
My 47 year old brother, his 41 year old wife and myself were singing them tonight, with no kids.[shhhh, don't tell anyone, I love 'em!] My girlfriend, a self-proclaimed elitist snob cannot stand them. I guess I'm just too lowbrow.:tongue_smilie:
Jenny in Florida
My girlfriend, a self-proclaimed elitist snob cannot stand them. I guess I'm just too lowbrow.:tongue_smilie: I guess this is the attitude I don't get. I, too, proudly proclaim mt snob-hood. But we still love these things. I've heard people argue that "making fun" of classical music will teach kids to think of it as something to be mocked, but that's not how it worked here. Both of my kids loved these CDs when they were younger, and both are classical music fans now. In fact, they're so snobby about music that they often have trouble relating to kids their own age. For contrast, I've never liked Victor Borge, because it always seems to me like he's making fun of the music, as well as the people who perform it and those who love it. But Beethoven's Wig always feels to me like a gentle, respectful, shared joke. And, hey, the lyrics are catchy!
