Liza Q
I have been researching (and reading old threads) and I keep seeing these three - Noeo, Real Science 4 kids and Christian Kids Chemistry. I like Noeo Chem 2 best because I would love the kit! But my daughter is really pushing for a program that doesn't have a lot of books to choose from :glare:. I amy not give in on this one since she is also pushing hard for a change of approach in History and Writing and I do have to think about myself and my son as well!!! Real Science is harder to figure out - Pre-Level 1 looks way too easy but Level 1 looks - really hard! Could we use both levels in one year? We could go through the first book fairly quickly and slow down when we needed to. But I can't tell whether the experiments repeat themselves; if they did, that would be a drag. Plus it would be kind of expensive. And I'd have to get all the piddly lab equipment - yuck! Christian Kids explore Chem also looks very good. The level looks perfect for my daughter but I think that it might be a little hard for my son. I can always work with him and bring it down to his level, though. And again - I have to collect stuff every week - yuck!! So - my real question is about Real Sci - can I use both levels in one school year? And does it work well with more than one child - I read that the children are encouraged towards a lot of independence in the labs and I just know that my two won't be seeing eye to eye on how to approach them! Thanks.
PeterPan
Have you looked at The Elements by McHenry? I have it sitting with me right now, just trying to decide when we'll start. It would be great for 4th and 6th graders. :)
Liza Q
Ack - another one? OK - I am off to check it out! Thanks :)
Liza Q
Bump - anyone using Real Science Chemistry (or any elementary level chemistry!) want to take a crack at this one?
Jen500
I don't think RS4K Chem 1 is too hard for a 4th and 6th grader. I just had to buy a few things at the store to do the labs. We did it fine with two boys together. Sometimes they had their own experiment, sometimes we just did it together. They had their own lab sheets though. Sometimes my 4 yr old tagged along with the experiment. I wouldn't bother with the pre-level.

Geo
I'll be using R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey- Chemistry 1 next year with my 5th grader. It just came out a couple days ago. It looks to be good balance between book and lab. I'd use it with a 6th grader, especially if their not a science geek. We tried the RS4K Pre-Level 1 Chemistry a couple years ago and we didn't care much for it, but to each his own. You can check out sample pages here: http://www.pandiapress.com/chemistry_level1.html Geo Edited March 29, 2009 by Geo
Liza Q
Thanks! Our homeschool group had a book sale yesterday and I found a copy of RS4Kids Chemistry 1 for only $5.! Figuring it could be a good reference even if we use something else, I bought it. It is both better and shorter than I expected! I am planning to go to a big convention in May so I am hoping to see some of the others that you mentioned - it's nice to have a list of things that I know real families have used :)
