Mom0012
I need help with deciding what science to use for next year. So far, we have used SL pre-k, K, 1 and 2, except for the language arts. Science K and 1 were great for us. The variety of topics does not bother me. The first part of SL Science 2 was fine, but the second half hasn't been great because I really haven't been happy with the Usborne Book of Knowledge. Basically, it's just very boring to me and my kids don't seem nearly as interested in it as they have in the other books we've used. I have the SL 3 Science IG. It is not the one with all the new changes. Do you think we'd be happy with SL 3 if we were happy with everything up to now except for the Book of Knowledge? How is the Introduction to Biology book? If I used SL 3, would I be better off to get the brand new IG which uses Real Science for Kids instead of Introduction to Biology? I'll list what I have heard is in the new SL 3 Science below in case anyone is interested. If I don't use SL, I was thinking about Apologia or using Considering God's Creation (which I already own) and adding in a bunch of books from the library. I'd love to hear any and all thoughts on this so I can lay it to rest! Thanks! siloam
Lisa, If it makes you feel better my kids didn't like the Big Book of Knowledge either. If you have the version of Science 3 that uses Real Science 4 kids, then I would use that one, unless you feel one of the new books is not to miss. The new texts for this year are: Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution I DVD Water (only for the 5 day program) The author is listed as Day. If you have an older version that uses Introduction to Biology, I would upgrade. While I haven't read it (or used Science 3), I do own it and it is a chapter book with few pictures and I have heard quite a few complaints about how it drones on. On the other hand Real Science 4 Kids is a color text. While I am sure it is not as in depth, I am willing to bet the kids will enjoy it a lot more. Mostly bumping you up, so someone who has used it can help you. :D Heather
Mom0012
Heather - Thanks for clarifying what is new with SL 3 science for this year. I've got an old SL catalog that I've been marking up for years and I didn't realize some of those books had already changed before this year. I guess I'm totally out of the loop. I also realized I don't even have the science IG, just the bible, history, read-aloud one, so at least now I know which one I need to buy if I go with SL. Thanks for letting me know what you've heard about Intro to Biology. I'd still love to hear from others who have used SL 3. Thanks! Mothersweets
I used SL 3 science with a 9, 11, and 12yo a couple years ago and I recommend that you get the new '09 version. The old version was okay, but my kids would get restless with the Intro to Biology book and would tune out. They did enjoy the Mysteries and Marvels of Creation book. I don't have my new catalog yet (grrr!) but from the books you listed, it looks like this new version is much more user-friendly. HTH! Blackforest mom
I will say that I really like those TOPS books. Especially the ones on electricity and magnetism.
