jedbel
O.K. so ds9 has always read and loved the (non-twaddley:tongue_smilie:) books that I have chosen for him. Yesterday we went to a used bookstore and he was delighted to find that there is a Lego Bionicle series of books. He immediately asked if he could purchase book one with his own money. I inwardly cringed and tried to explain the whole twaddle vs. great books thing to him. After hearing me out he charmingly replied "Oh mom don't worry! I will continue reading the good books you give me and will just read the Lego Bionicle ones on the side as a hobby" :lol:He is really into Legos so I can totally understand his excitement and I gave him permission to buy the first book but I am so not liking this..... skaterbabs
I think about "twaddle" books the same way I think about dessert - all things in moderation. ;) But to save your pocketbook, you might want to look at your local Goodwill or other similar place for copies. plain jane
I would go ahead and let him read them in a heart beat. As much as I am a big believer in non-twaddle and I strive to fill our home library with quality literature, I believe it's equally important to instill a deep love of reading in our children. Reading some books that interest him will do just that. Sure, they're just brain candy, but why not? Just because vegetables are superior health-wise doesn't mean we don't each indulge in a little ice cream once in a while. Life and learning is all about balance and it sounds like you've found a good one for your family. :) Great work, mom! Sounds like you have a wonderful little boy, who loves to read. skaterbabs
:iagree: Exactly! While I wouldn't allow my daughter (a confirmed chocoholic!) to have chocolate at every meal, the occasional candy bar isn't going to ruin her for life.

Emma
:iagree: Just be thankful that he is reading by his own choice! Comics, catalogs, twaddle, as long as they are reading!
dragons in the flower bed
I'm not always successful at this, but my guideline is that they can read fluffy books but not own them. This allows me to remedy an overdose of junky reading by not taking them to the library for a month.

Starr
Oh the pain :tongue_smilie: I went through the same thoughts. We own a couple but most were read during visits to the book store. Ok, I think I even let him check out a couple from the library. He lived through it! He even enjoys the Iliad at 12 1/2. I wouldn't worry about this one Mom.
