Homeschooling6
A while back some of you listed poems on cd. I had these in my cart on Amazon, but lost them. I tried searching for the original post but it was sometime last year. Would appreciate it if you all would share;) I don't remember any of the titles. I do know that some were book & cd combo. Blessedfamily
A Child's Introduction to Poetry by Michael Driscoll. I found this in my Amazon cart today and was about to order it, but didn't. Now I know where I must have gotten the recommendation. Do you like it? I used a wonderful book from this series called "Story Of the Orchestra" to introduce composers and musical instruments to dd. http://www.amazon.com/Story-Orchestra-Listen-Instruments-Composers/dp/1579121489/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238106821&sr=8-
Zoo Keeper
Well, I wasn't on last year's thread, but here is a book/CD combo that our whole family loves to listen to: Poetry Speaks to Children, Elise Paschen, ed.; ISBN 1-4022-0329-2 It has quite a diverse range of poems: classic, new, short, long, funny, and serious. Many of them are read by the poet; all are well read and interesting. Our local library's copy spends a lot of time at my house.
abbeyej
I have both of the books listed above. I love the *book* for A Child's Introduction to Poetry. It has wonderful clear explanations for a variety of types of poetry, then a few examples of each. It's by no means exhaustive, but it's wonderful for what it is: an introduction. ... Unfortunately, I'm not fond of the CD. In fact, I can't even comment on it much, 'cause I listened once, couldn't stand it, put it away and haven't pulled it out again. I just didn't like either one of the two readers at all. But the book is so good, it's still worth the price (and perhaps you'll feel more charitable towards the CD than I did). I'm less in love with the selections in Poetry Speaks to Children as a whole, but the CD is really excellent. It's just wonderful. I can't listen to one of the selections when driving the car, 'cause it makes me cry every single time. Most of the selections on the cd (I believe there are more in the book than on the cd) are read by the poets themselves, and that's wonderful. A few are read by "friends". It's very good. Another CD of poetry is Andrew Pudewa's "Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization" program. It's a great little book with an article (two?) on why poetry memorization is important and how to go about it, then a really nice (quite varied) anthology of poetry for children to learn, divided by level. There's a CD with Mr. Pudewa reading all of the poems. He's, again, not my favorite reader, but the selections are great, and it's a wonderful way to memorize poems with kids. Paintedlady
I would 2nd the reccommendation on Andrew Pudewa's "Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization." I've got both the book and cd's and they're VERY good. We've been working through them for almost a year and it's one of our favorite curriculums. hth!
