Danestress
They loved Redwall, Harry Potter, and even read the Warrior series. They like books with animals as characters, but their reading level is too high for a lot of the books that are written with animals as characters. They don't want to read things that seem babyish, but they also don't seem to relate to human middle school aged kids with the issues a lot of kids in books for that demographic explore. They did like Hoot and his other novel (Flush?) They have liked adventure books like My Side of The Mountain and loved, when younger, Owls in the Family and Rascal. They neither one seem to like fantasy. I haven't been able to get them to really enjoy the Dark is Rising books or Eragon (though they did both read it). Just trying to get some new ideas! lmrich
My 11 year old son read 39 clues (three in the series) this weekend and has been on the computer trying to figure out the mystery. I really don't know much about the series, but wow did he like them and there are more coming out soon.
Nissi
My ds. who loved Redwall also liked Chronicles of Narnia, Freddy the Pig Series, James Herriot Tales, Hank the Cowdog, and Lord of the Rings.
daisychics
OOOhhhhh.... try 100 cupboards! http://www.amazon.com/100-Cupboards-Book/dp/0375838821/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238090562&sr=8-1 Ds and I loved that book! I read it to him. We're reading the 2nd book now, Dandelion Fire (we're on chapter 5). When we were reading 100 cupboards, he would ask me to read it at breakfast, lunch, whenever we had a quiet moment.
Stacy in NJ
My dss, ages 10 and 11, have loved the following series: Percy Jackson, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Pendragon, The Rangers Apprentice, Artemis Fowl, and The City of Ember. Percy Jackson is a particular passion here.
clementine
Try the Ga'Hoole series - very similar to the Warriors series, but with owls instead of cats. Big hit at our house!!
lynn
My son liked the Series of Unfortunate Events, anything by jules verne. He also enjoyed Diary of a Wimpy Kid,although they lower reading level, which I let him read because he was so good about reading whatever is on our more serious reading list and needed something light. Jacklyn
they are 13. One is an avid reader, the other is not. My reader also liked the Percy Jackson series, Mysterious Benedict Society, and most of the others mentioned above. His latest rave is The Ordinary Boy series. They both also read the books by Anthony Horowitz beginning with Storm Breaker. These are found in the Young Adult section of the library. They are more intense, but I have to say my non-reader was found buried in each and every book. It was a shock to find him in his bed READING when he is usually outside doing anything but reading. Danestress
I put a bunch of things on hold, checked out several books with them, and bought the first of the 39 Clues books at Barnes and Nobles. That ought to keep them busy for a few days! Dana
mom31257
My 12yo dd loves science fiction. Does that count as fantasy? She enjoyed the tri-pod series by John Christopher. I think the first one is called The White Mountains.

Stacia
Have they read "The Hobbit" yet? ETA: You may want to check out some of Lloyd Alexander's books. Edited March 27, 2009 by Stacia
dhudson
The Artemis Fowl books by Eion Colfer are about fairies but I definitely wouldn't characterize tham as your typical fantasy. More action and adventure. My 10 yr old ds LOVES them.
Danestress
I am totally wanting you to be my sister now! What a great great great list! I have a bad habit of letting my older sister do all the research, and just doing whatever she says to do. The only problem is, she doesn't homeschool. So for the purposes of homeschool, could you please just do the research and just tell me what to do from now on? I think you have the skills!!!! Thanks for the awesome lists.
