A home for their hearts Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I'm considering getting this for my dd9. She is ready at about a third grade level. When I gave her the placement test, she tested for level B short version. She already knew all the words in it so I thought we would try level C. My concern is although she could read the words in level B, she doesn't have any experience with flexing the sounds of words she doesn't know. She scored a 5 on the nonsense words in the placement test, hence short B. I really struggle myself with this curriculum and the way it works. I'm afraid I may be getting in the way of it because have the time I'm confused and I have to stop and think. I would like an example of how level C works. The resell on these books are the greatest so I don't want to keep wasting my money. But sometimes the only way you can tell if something will work is when you try it. We are also using AAS, we are on level 2. I thought I could use this for phonics as well. What I like about Abecedarian is the nonsense words it teaches so you can learn how to sound a word out you don't know. Any advice or suggestions? I'm pulling my hair out. I was also looking at English from the Roots Up. Abecedarian level C focuses on latin roots to help with vocabulary. I was thinking maybe we should just drop Abecedarian all together since it is stressing me out and go with English from the Roots Up. Quote
MommyX8 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I bought it for my 3rd grader but I didn't like it. I did send it back so it did cost me $10 shipping one way and then the return shipping. I didn't feel that there was anything special about it. I am using CLE for English. And we will do EFTRU starting in 4th grade, so I am fine with what I have. Quote

I'm thinking she needs more practice with the non-sense words. Quote
Matryoshka Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I'd be interested in hearing more responses on this as I was contemplating getting it for my dd8 who reads quite well but sometimes stumbles on long words and can't spell (or doesn't care to). I am very familiar with the PhonoGraphix method, so I thought this might be a good choice, especially as it seemed quick and open-and-go. I'd probably continue using Sequential Spelling and add this in. She was on the borderline for using the Short B - I talked to the author, and he suggested that there were some free things at the website I could use to beef that up in lieu of buying Short B, and just move into C. To the OP - what are you finding difficult about implementing it? I'm wondering if it's something I should worry about, or if it has something to do with the PhonoGraphix way of presenting the material, if I could help. Do you have the Teacher's Manual? To ustasmom - what about it rubbed you the wrong way - what were you looking for in a program that it lacked? I haven't actually bought this yet, but just about have my finger on the button, so I'm interested in what you have to say! Quote

I'm interested to know what the author suggested on the website to use in lieu of short B? Short B just didn't work for my dd since she could already read all the words in it. I didn't think there was enough nonsense word practice in it. To the OP - what are you finding difficult about implementing it? I'm wondering if it's something I should worry about, or if it has something to do with the PhonoGraphix way of presenting the material, if I could help. Do you have the Teacher's Manual? I do have the teachers manual, and it is very open and go if you understand the method of how PhonoGraphix works which I do not. I am still learning and I'm getting a little hung up on it. My ds8 will soon be starting B-1 and I think presenting all the different ways of spelling one sound my really throw him off. I'm very knew to this method so any advice you can give me I would really appreciate!. I would say if you know the PhonoGraphix method Abecedarian should work well for you. Quote
