Haiku
Can anyone give me some information on the difference between D2 and D3? Our pediatrician recommended a D3 supplement, but it is animal-based. The woman at the health food store said that they have a D2, which is plant-based. We are vegan. Tara
Pam "SFSOM" in TN
Can anyone give me some information on the difference between D2 and D3? Tara Is there something that restricts you from going out for 15 mins a day? Latitude, perhaps? Because I wouldn't supplement vitamin D. I'd just go out in the sun without a hat for 15 mins and let my body do what it's designed/evolved to do. (And I have no actual intelligent answer to your question, lol!) swellmomma
From what I understand D3 is better processed by the body than D2 so the supplement works better. We all take D3 here (even the baby has drops). IF however you are opposed to anything that would have any animal base then take the D2, it is better than not taking any at all. Haiku
Yeah, I have been doing some reading and have read that D2 is very poorly absorbed. The pediatrician is recommending supplementation for one specific kid because of blood tests that reveal a severe vitamin D deficiency. Because of where we live and my child's dark skin, we don't have reliable access to sunlight all year round. Tara

It's not being used as a preventative measure but to treat a deficiency so the higher aborbancy is needed.
Haiku
Solgar has a lanolin-based D3 in a vegetable capsule, so I think we will go with that. Tara :)
Haiku
I just wanted to add that the doctor said that the Vitamin D deficiency has nothing to do with our vegan diet and that many people, vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, have vitamin D deficiencies. yslek
When I was shopping for a D3 supplement at the local supplement store, I was told that Carlson's drops (http://www.vitacost.com/Carlson-Vitamin-D-Drops?csrc=GPF-088395019203) are lanolin-based. This is what I give my children (not vegetarian/vegan...this is just very cost-effective. :))
Haiku
The Carlsons website says that the D3 in their products is from fish liver oil. Tara
KS_
You might check out Bio-D-Mulsion - I don't see where it says what the source is, but if you're going for the drops, these were less expensive per dose than the Carlson ones. 400IU drops http://store.agoodvitamin.com/birebiod1flo.html 2000IU drops http://store.agoodvitamin.com/birebiod1oz.html
stripe
Is there some sort of lamp you could get?
