Alison in KY Posted March 25, 2009 Share Posted March 25, 2009 I just figured out that my son can't remember how to subtract those large numbers which require borrowing (those biggies from Beta). This is the first time I've had an issue with MUS. I guess it's my own fault for not paying attention. Anyway, do you just occasionally work out some old problems? Will Delta have any addition/subtraction in it? Any ideas on what has helped you out? I'm pretty much an open and go person, so this has slightly messed me up. I found that in working with division all the time (and yes, long division involves quite a bit of addition and subtraction) my son isn't as quick-on-the-draw with his multiplication facts. (And in fact seems to have lost the 12's facts altogether! LOL) So, we started adding a weekly flashcard multiplication drill. I vote for pulling a practice page from Beta from the website weekly... or some such similar thing, so that he gets in good practice with a dozen problems or so weekly. Even if you divide the page up so that he only completes a few problems and does it every day, or something similar, it will help to continue having him work those sorts of problems so that he doesn't lose it! :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thanks, Alison in KY Ds is going to be tested for 2nd grade next week (it's required every year here). He is already using Delta - we stopped our lessons, so we can review. Anyways -- we went through Beta in 1.5 weeks, watching 4 lessons a day. :001_huh::auto: zipped through it (with the workbook as well, since he didn't do all the pages the first time). It was fun because he enjoyed doing it fast. Maybe you can stop Gamma for a while and watch the Beta DVD again on the lessons he needs to review. We even did Alpha again, just so he can solidify adding to 10 and all those little tricks in the beginning. Hope I'm making sense. Good luck! Yeah I did notice too that from time to time ds would forget the various conversion facts (like converting quarts to gallons). Actually, I noticed when we did the systematic review sheets. :001_huh: The systematic review sheets (D-F) actually do quite a bit of review of things even from levels before. For example, in the delta review sheets, there are questions about multi-digit addition and subtraction in addition to more word problems. So, I would suggest you doing the systematic reviews, and do a more in depth review of the types of problems that the child has trouble with. Going back to watch the DVD instruction is also a good idea! Also, you can go to their website http://mathusee.com and print off computer generated worksheets based on the level that you want. Amy C Posted March 26, 2009 Share Posted March 26, 2009 At the beginning of Gamma I would make up two or three addition problems and two or three subtraction problems and just write them on the blank page on the left side of the book.
