We have been using GWG for 2 years and he still is not comfortable with nouns, verbs, and today adjectives. GWG also has diagramming which I draw it out and he fills in the blanks. He does well that way. Why can't he get it when it says underline the adjective in the sentence. My son is 4th grade working in the 4 book and we are half way through it. thanks

Grammar concepts are very abstract. Most kids get the hang of nouns pretty fast because they are concrete (ball, dog, hat). So are verbs (run, jump, play). After that, it gets a bit foggy. Helping verbs?? I remember dd thinking vacuuming was a helping verb because it is helpful to vacuume! Adj are a bit foggier - how pretty, how big, how many, etc. But, adverbs - way out there for some dc. How does your ds do with logic? Does he grasp the abstract conepts readily? If not, then you might want to take a brief break and do some logic. Maybe concentrate on punctuation and writing lessons to give that developement a chance to catch up. THis one is different for each child. Some play chess early, some later (some like me, never seem to get it!).

Outside of that, I can suggest the Ruth Heller books. These are absolutely wonderful. They are short - gorgeously illustrated - books on the various parts of speech. "Many Luscious Lollipops" are about adj. "UP, Up and Away" about adv. Kites sail High is about verbs. There are several other titles. We bought these to help clarify the different parts of speech.

You might also get your hands on the WInston Grammar Cards. The program is for 6th and up (I think), but the cards are wonderful. There is a card for each part of speech and you actually lay out the cards based on the sentence (article, noun, helping verb, adv, verb, prep etc). There are also cards to help locate various parts of speech. Start with card one and answer those questions to find subject. Then move on to card to to find verbs. Card three, four and five and so on.

I hope that helps some!!

I have no idea.... we used 4 and then moved right into JAG... its been pretty simple for her so far... but I wanted to make sure her transition into AG was smooth.

The one thing I like about JAG and AG is it teaches the kids to think about the definition and ask or say it.... and it teaches me to teach it... I also review the previous lesson before a new one... this could also help... it doesnt take much longer.

Maybe lead him through it for a few problems and help him to recognize what he might be looking for. An adjective usually precedes the noun... locate the noun first... then look at the word before it... does the word ask a question?? Talking them through and helping them see it is a big step... it is a hard concept sometimes but he will get it. *Ü* Here are a few examples to show you what I mean....

(a kind boy) a is the article kind is the adj and boy is the noun so ask....

what type of boy? kind

a month's pay .... how much pay? months

Hope the tips help! They work pretty good for us...

Best regards, Lisa
