mlbuchina
I have been trying to come up with a name for our "school", and I seem to have writer's block. How did you come up with your school names? I thought it might be fun to hear other's ideas. I have seen some really neat names on this forum. Thanks!
LadyAberlin
I just decided on mine yesterday. It is The Academy of Liber and Virtue. I got the idea from the Thomas Jefferson Education book. They were talking about how these were qualities that our founding fathers had that we don't have any longer. They said we need to have liber which is being well read in the classics and Public virtue where we are willing to do what is right for our country no matter the costs (life, money etc.) I only put virtue because, as well as Public virtue, I want my kids to be privately virtuous too. Haiku
I had no idea what to call our homeschool until one day when my son, who is a Bob Marley fan, was listening to Legend and the words "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds" jumped out at me, and Marley Academy was born! Guest
Since my kids are little, I wanted to think of an appropriate "littles" name for the next few years with the intention of changing it down the road. I thought about my goals and visions for homeschooling and parenting. I thought about/liked the concept of them being little lambs in the eyes of God. DH is of Swedish/Norwegian descent so I wanted to incorporate something from that heritage. So, I decided on Little Lamb Academy, but in Swedish: Litten Lamm Academy. I love in Plaid Dad's book (LCC) when he talks about finding the truth, goodness and beauty in this world and recognizing God as the source. So, that's our new motto. Litten Lamm Academy: Truth. Goodness. Beauty. (When they get older we'll probably switch from Litten Lamm to something "older") :)
mazakaal
Early in our homeschooling journey we were living on a road called Chapel Hill, so I called our school Chapel Hill Academy. I liked the thought of a chapel on a hill - beacon of light. We've since moved, but I kept the name.
elegantlion
Ours, Wakefield Academy, was named from a street that was plotted to run through the property where we used to live. It was never developed, but I liked the way it sounded. We have since moved, but the name stuck.
MamaT
Our school name is Mountainside School. Guess where we live? Yep, on the side of a mountain.
dalynnrmc
Very generic. Where we are, our style of learning, the specific inclusion of Christian morals, values, and teachings. peachskittles
I've yet to really decide on ours...For now it's generic and easy, our last name with homeschool at the end... Kinda odd though that a college has the same name as my last name...So I'll have to think of something different eventually...
nukeswife
We went through a few, first we were Evanlu Academy, which I got by using the first 2 letters of my 3 kids names. The kids hated it and asked for something else. My dh came up with Voyager Academy (after our favorite Star Trek show) and that lasted about a year until I found out there is actually a Voyager Academy in NC I believe. So I asked the kids what they thought of when they thought of our school. They love Fawkes the Phoenix from Harry Potter and wanted the Phoenix to be our mascot. So we became Fawkes Academy. It will fit for the long haul which is great and the kids still love it. We even had T-shirts made with our school mascot picture, name and motto on them (I did this as http://www.zazzle.com) and they were a big hit. Our Motto is "Soaring through home education"
meldamo
We didn't need a name for anything and have never used it for anything other than our blog address, so we looked up funny Latin phrases and chose one that wasn't already being used on blogger. I have never really done the work to make sure that it really means what we think it means, though. We take our school seriously, but it was difficult to give ourselves too serious a name. Jean in Wisc
When we bought our farm, we stumbled upon an old map of our county. Our farm was registered under the name of Fairview; thus, Fairview Classical.

MOHeather
Solid Rock Christian Academy My husband and I chose this because we base our home education on scripture and we want our children to base their lives on the Word of God. "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." Aurelia
I chose Excelsior Preparatory School because I wanted something other than "academy" and I liked the definition: ever upward. I feel we should try to reach higher, do more all the time, and this is a good reminder. Also, since Ariel is young, I would like her to go to college and figured it would look good on her transcript. ;) Lately though, I've been thinking of changing it to Excelsior School for the Arts, at least temporarily, since so much of our time is/will be spent on creative stuff, like art, music and dance. Next year we will probably add a drama class, too. :tongue_smilie:
Geo
Our's is "L'Abri School". Since the provision for homeschooling in NC is under the "non-public education" statute", all homeschools are required to name their "schools". About the time we moved here, I was really into reading about Francis Schaeffer and his family and their ministry - "L'Abri", which is french for "The Shelter". It seemed too appropriate to pass up. Oh yeah, once established, the school cannot change it's name. Too bad for one short-sighted mom here in town. She had to issue her children high school diplomas from "Fry Elementary". Oh, the horror. :001_huh: Geo Edited March 22, 2009 by Geo
