Arts and crafts

Does anyone have any good books for doing arts and crafts? My 9yog, 7yob and 5yob want to do them and I have no idea where to start. I don't want cutting, coloring and pasting (like Abeka). I'd like to use clay, paint, etc and have a good ole time with a once a week planned activity.

Help!

We have "ArtWorks for Kids" and "How to Teach Art to Children" by Evan-Moor. They have a nice variety of projects. The local library has an entire section of arts and crafts books in the children's section that has given inspiration, too. The dc love Sculpey clays.

The Usborne Big book of Playtime Activities has a lot of great ideas that are easy to do, and fun for kids the ages of your dc. If these activities look to simple for your 9 yo, the Usborne Art Treasury is nice as well. the Art treasury includes information about a number of famous artists, with corresponding art projects to go with them. It's very well done, IMO.

for your littlest littles, Evan Moor's Fun With the Alphabet might be a fun resource.

It provides a coloring page, a recipe, a story, a craft project, and other ideas for each letter of the alphabet.

The lines for handwriting are too small, IMO, so we didn't do those, but the rest was a lot of fun. Most of the craft projects require only construction paper and a glue stick, so they are easy to make (I cut all of the parts in advance, because they weren't ready for all of the cutting when they were in that age). We hung them on bedroom doors and closet doors all over the house and left them up for about a year - they were very, very cute projects!

Celebrating Art is an inexpensive book that I picked up this year to make sure I do those artsy things with my younger since my middle is taking outside art classes. Both of the girls have been having fun doing these art projects. It is literature based and all of the directions are included. For instance, you read Gingerbread Man then there are 5 or 6 crafts that go along with it like making your own playdough or cutting patterns and making your own little Gingerbread scene and reenacting the story. I was very surprised to see that my older dd really enjoyed the projects even though I thought it was geared just for a younger age.

I've been considering Art for All Seasons. It's listed for grades 1-4, but you can peek inside on Amazon and see if it looks like it would work for you. Here's the link:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1557999538/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link. Amazon really has tons of different books of crafts and art for kids, in case you don't get a recommendation you like here. :001_smile:
