Whitneyz
for a 10th grader? Something about British Imperialism in Africa, India, Australia or Ireland. Any biographies or historical fiction, etc. Thanks, Whitney
TeacherZee
Swifts "A Modest Proposal" should lead to thought provoking discussions regarding "The Irish Question".
Liza Q
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (Africa) and A Passage to India by E.M. Forster (India) would work well...but look them over to see if your 10th grader is mature enough for them - there are sexual themes. I assigned the first in to my oldest for 10th grade and then she chose the second in the 11th grade (she was on an E.M. Forster kick after A Room with a View and Howard's End). I will probably be assigning both to my current 10th grader when she is a Senior, as we will be up to Modern History then. Things Fall Apart made a particularly large impression on my daughter and I am looking forward to reading it again with my next child! I don't know of any for Australia and Ireland...hope you get some good suggestions! Lori D.
Cry The Beloved Country is a powerful, poignant and beautiful novel in which you see, even in the early 1950s, the legacy of British/Dutch colonization on the social and political situation of South Africa. This one can be done in high school.
Whitneyz
Thank you everyone. I've got them all on order! Although she read Things Fall Apart. Liza Q I couldn't get that list of books. I'll try again. Thanks, Whitney
Laura Corin
Kim and Anna and the King of Siam. Other short stories by Kipling. There are questions as to whether Anna and the King of Siam is a reasonably honest account or fantastically embellished. If you are looking for British Empire books, then Thailand doesn't fit so well, as it was never part of the BE. Best wishes Laura
Whitneyz
I appreciate the book list. We're off to the library!
