Printing photos at home

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a good, affordable photo printer?

I've never been impressed with photos I've seen that have been home-printed, but I keep hearing how great it is. Do those stand-alone photo printers work as well as they say?

I'm realizing that since I went digital, I've been horrible about printing photos. I'm thinking if I had my own printer I would print more. Would I?

My recommendation is to upload as you take them to a site - I've used Wal-mart and when you have a certain number, have them printed and mailed to your home.

If you do this as you go along and it isn't such a big job.

I haven't had any luck with printers, I've tried 3 and they all produced poor quality pics.

I have excellent results getting my photos printed by Snapfish.com.

Before that, I used photo quality inkjets (Epsons) and also a dye sublimation printer. While the quality of the dye sublimation printer was very good, it took a long time to print and the materials were very expensive.

Instead of spending a lot of time waiting for your printer to crank out high quality prints, I feel it would be better to spend that time cropping and doing some editing in photo editing software prior to uploading the files to a printing service.

Because the cost of web-based printing is so reasonable, I can print a whole mess of photos and order duplicates for friends, etc.

I find that the quality of the prints is just as good or better with a web-based printing service than anything I could print at home, even with the dye sublimation printer. They can afford much better printers than I can!

Ours print fine, but you end up spending just as much in ink and it's much easier to do them online and they look better. Plus, when you do them online, you can send them directly to family in other states. Walmart and all the big online places like snapfish and ofoto all have the option of sending to other people. Walmart, you can also send to stores near friends and family and have them go pick them up there if they prefer that.

I prefer to rpint at home for a variety of reasons.

1. print life. My home prints are rated to last a whole heck of a lot longer than anything i get from a machine (40 years for Fuji vs 100+ for my printer)

2. control. I spent too much time printing pics in a lab.... i'm anal and never happy with what i pick up that other people have printed for me :D

I have an espon R1800 that produces nothing short of STUNNING pictures. The Epson Picturemate does the same thing - the new ones aren't pigment based ink though, so i'm not sure on that.... i'm a pigment ink lover for longevity, butyou get more "colors" with dye based inks.

You can see ratings for a variety of printers at the link i posted.

There you have my personal reasons for doing it at home (and since i only print what i want in the size i want, it works out cheaper for me too).
