VanessaS
So... homeschooling my children has inspired me to go back to college and finish my own education. I'm registering to complete a degree in Accounting with a minor in Business. My goal is a CPA as I used to work as a process auditor and would like to return to that when I rejoin the "workforce". My family are all really supportive but I can't help but think: am I crazy to be doing this while homeschooling 2 kids? Has anybody else done this? What was/is your experience? I'll only be able to study part-time so it will be 10 years before I've gotten my CPA. It seems like such a long haul.
Amy in MI
Good luck to you! I'm also considering going back to school to complete my degree. I'm going to take one online class for the spring semester and see how it goes. I won't have much time to study because in addition to homeschooling I also work part time. Hang in there, I'm sure it will be worth it. Amy
sweetTN
Congratulations! My children kept me going back to school. I told myself it was because I wanted to set a good example for them, but actually I just loved the whole school thing! Between my dh's job transferring us around the country on an almost yearly basis and raising three dc it took me ten years to get my two year degree....but I got it! Now my grandchildren are getting close to college age so I am feeling the urge to go on for my four year degree. I have started taking some online college courses, which makes combining hs and college much easier. So, you are not crazy...you can do this....go for it! VanessaS
Thanks for the positive responses. I'm going to be taking evening and online courses the first 2 years and only online after that. I'm brushing up on my Spanish and math so that I can CLEP out of the first courses. I'm really looking forward to it. My DH said he can't believe I'm looking forward to accounting courses. That's engineer snobbery for you. LOL!
G5052
I say this only because it's come up with certain degree programs at the local community college where I teach. If you take too long on some degree programs, there are issues with licensing, so you pretty much have to plan on full-time at some point. We match our programs to four-year schools, so it isn't just the two-year programs. Finding that out ahead of time might affect your plans. I teach IT/CSC, so we really don't run into the licensing issue with our programs, but we have had students who had to restudy and even retake certain classes when they were going for an industry certification and there was too much of a gap between certain topics such that things changed in between. But seriously, homeschooling and going to school is possible, but of course hard. I work, homeschool, and periodically take classes to keep current, but DH says that I don't know any better :glare:. I actually found it easier when my kids where younger though. Now their academics take most of the day, and although they're more and more indepedent, the reality is that I have smaller blocks of time because I work on my stuff while they work but need to be available all day to help and advise.
