Nestof3
I've always used Easy Grammar/Daily Grams (used it completely with my eldest). I adore Easy Grammar, because it makes it so easy to label by crossing out the prepositional phrases first. I have been using Rod and Staff in the second grade to give a foundation before Easy Grammar, because EG doesn't start until third grade. So, right now, Ben is using R&S Grade 2, while Nathan is using Daily Grams and Easy Grammar Grade 3. I have been reading Writing with Ease and am considering using it with both boys, but it uses sentence diagramming. I am not opposed to teaching diagramming, in fact, I am quite open to it. I have been on the fence about many writing programs, and I admit failed to properly teach my eldest how to write. It has always been the most difficult subject for me to teach. Is there any way to have the best of both worlds? I'd love for you to just tell me what I need to know at this point about using R&S with Writing with Ease. razorbackmama
I literally had to look up in the index where it talks about diagramming since I couldn't even figure out where it might have talked about it! So I found it.:001_smile: Diagramming (I'm assuming) will be covered in a future book (levels 5-8). WWE only covers levels 1-4, and no diagramming is involved there. From what I've read (please someone correct me if I'm wrong), SWB hasn't written the 2nd book yet and isn't sure when it will be out. So you're safe.:D

Well, you know, there doesn't need to be a foundation before EG; IMHO, here doesn't need to be formal grammar before 3rd grade anyway (and we didn't do grammar until dd was 10 or 11). I also don't think it's necessary to do EG and DG simultaneously. Because of the writing instruction in R&S's English books, I wouldn't use anything additional for writing. I'd say drop R&S, do WWE, and wait for Easy Grammar.

They started EG 6 this year and are finding it very easy to do. I'm glad we waited, because as much as I like EG, I don't think it needs to be done year after year - after we finish EG 6 (I'm doing it over 2 yrs) we'll move on to something else. With my dd8, I'm doing WWE2, she's doing a lot of Mad Libs, there's again some foreign language, EIC, and the Grammar Rock. She's also been listening in on her sisters' EG 6 lessons. I'm going to hold off on anything else until 5th with her as well.
PeterPan
Nest, you could easily add diagramming on, just by doing one sentence from your EG lesson each day on a whiteboard. That's what we're doing, and it's great. It allows us to keep the grammar approach we like (Shurley) but get in the diagramming she needs in small, gentle doses. And I wouldn't even bother till 4th or 5th gr with the diagramming. It's really a logic stage activity. The main thing is to really understand the grammar and relationships, what is modifying what. As long as that is there, the diagramming is going to come easily. At least it has for us.
