men in their thirties and video/computer games

Recommended Posts

I don't know of any studies but my brother in law is 32(or 33) and he plays for hours and hours(daily). He is unemployed right now so I know he plays for atleast 8 hours maybe more a day right now.

I don't know how my sister stands it.

Dh only plays Rock Band and he plays with the kids. He maybe spends 1-2 hours a week playing. Despite ds having several gaming systems, dh hasn't touched any of them unti Rock Band came out.

I have a friend who plays World of Warcraft for many hours each week. The husband and wife both play.

It's not uncommon for men (especially) to be gamers. Games began and grew in sophistication during the childhood of now 20 and 30 year olds.

IMO, there are important distintions between recreational playing, excessive playing and addiction.

Back before home computers, the man of the house would come home and watch telly. Before that, they came home and hid in the shed or behind a newspaper. It's all much the same really. A guy will take as much recreation time as he can. I do too, but being the owner of the magic boobies, I can't disappear for long...

I am wondering how widespread it is for men in their thirties to spend significant hours (like over fifteen) per week playing computer/video games. Has anybody seen any studies or have anything to say on this issue?

I haven't seen studies and I don't care to. One can find pretty much any study to support their opinion, so where does that really get us?

Honestly, I think this issue is not as big a deal as many people think. Yes, there are some cases where excessive gaming contributes to relationship issues, but I think these are not the norm.

Anyway, I think there certainly are worse things people could be doing. I would take gaming over quite a number of things anyday.

I also don't know of studies, but as others have said there is always something to fill down time and gaming is not really that bad.

My dh plays with the kids and alone about 10 hours a week or so, and honestly it is nice that he spends time with the kids doing things they enjoy. It keeps everyone out of my hair for a while so I can get some things done that I enjoy to. ;)

Dh doesn't play 15 hours a week every week, but there are weeks that he will. Right now he is reading and he is reading about 38 hours a week, if not more. He will read from 5-9:30 with breaks for helping with dinner and clean up. On the weekends he will read most of the day. I know he reads at work too.

When he gets like this, I wish he would play video games. Then at least we can play with him.

15+ hours? Dh (31) doesn't come close to that. Well, maybe if you count reading and writing about gaming on websites and forums in addition to actual gaming time.

I'm not sure what kinds of studies you're looking for. Can serious gamers be "normal"? Can they hold down a job? Can they be good spouses/parents? You can replace 'gamers' with 'homeschoolers' and I'm sure you'd get the same answers.

I'm fine with dh's gaming. He's here with us, often playing with us. He *could be out on a boat, trying to get away from us! ;)

Whatever a person spends their time, money and energy on reflects what is important to them. In moderation, I don't see a problem but when a person (not just saying men) devotes hours upon hours to something inanimate and shirks the real people in their life, (even it's to be on this board) there is a problem.

Here's an article about men deriving more pleasure from video games than women http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080204140115.htm

Soon to be ex wanted to come pick up his stuff and I offered to have him come get it when ds4 would be home so they could see each other. Stbx cared more about finding his Wii power cord than he did seeing ds4. He spent 5 min. talking to ds4 and 20 min. looking for the Wii cord. Do you know how many times I heard him yell at the kids not to touch the Wii stuff, about how expensive it is? If I heard one more time about his Guitar Hero guitar being $75 and how ds4 couldn't play with it...sigh. That part of my life is over, thankfully.

While men might enjoy it more, there is still responsibilities and priorities which unfortunately get pushed aside (in my experience) at the expense of something not real at all. Hey, I was guilty of it too for a while when I spent so much time here. I don't anymore, my priorities have readjusted. :)

recent thread about dh's & video games

Frankly, I had a hard time understanding some of the attitudes in that thread ...I don't know why anyone would be so quick to judge another person's hobby. :001_huh: I find knitting to be dull - scratch that. I find knitting to be mind numbingly dull... but I don't go around saying that knitting is foolish and that I can't understand why a grown woman would spend her time messing with yarn. I just don't knit! :)

Well...I love knitting! But dh loves gaming...and I totally understand that. He has a blast with it. I'm glad he has something to do that he loves so much.

I've seen some. Don't remember where. 30-something is the average age of a gamer today.

DH plays 1-1.5 hrs a day, typically, and is below average for a gamer. He also watches no TV.
