mommysweird
I have it "narrowed down" to the following for DS who will be in 2nd grade: Sonlight Core 1 w/2nd readers MFW ADV WP CAtW OR AS1 I'm really torn between American History or World History. I want DS to have a worldview, but with the US in the mess it's in, I also want him to understand our roots before it's too late (and quite frankly, I'd like to study it with him to renew my faith in this country). We've had some experience with MFW in K. We didn't use MFW for 1st because I just didn't feel peace about the 1st grade program. But I think their programs from ADV on are excellent. Our LA and Math will most likely continue to come from Time4Learning as that's working out great and I don't want to fix something that's not broken, KWIM? Thanks! Guest aquiverfull
For the age of your son, I would say WP AS1. We did it this year with my 10 year old dd who is in 4th grade. For her age, I found it a little too light, but I feel it would be perfect for 2nd grade. We enjoyed many of the read alouds and she loves the activities. Prior to that we did SL core 1+2 and my dd much prefers the books and activities in WP over SL. Hope this helps you some. :)
tuckabella
I keep hearing that WP CatW should be held until 4th grade or so with all the topics that need more maturity. I have AS1 and it looks really fun!

happyWImom
It is so funny, because I am totally torn between the 3 also!!! And, I actually have all 3-how crazy is that??? I got used IG's for all 3 last year, and have many of the books. I wish I could pay someone to somehow incorporate them all into 1 thing for me. I also have SOTW 1, and was trying to incorporate it in too! I am leaning towards doing MFW Adventures as my main IG, doing SOTW and adding the SL books when they fit with SOTW, and using the WP AS1 activities & links when they fit with Adventures. But.....that sounds overly ambitious, doesn't it? When I really get to thinking about all of the tweaking, I want to just pitch it all.:001_huh: I'll be interested to see what you end up going with. mommysweird
Well, after having lunch with a friend today who is doing MFW ADV next year, I am STILL just as confused as I was when I wrote this (maybe more ) I'm just going to get everything side-by-side and try to compare. Arrgh!
Mandy in TN
And just to add to the confusion- I seriously considered MFW Adv and have decided to use HOD Bigger next year instead. It includes everything, so you don't have to make trips to the library for a book basket. The art is tied to the history. The science in Bigger is a step up from MFW Adv. I like the idea of covering history from a biographically perspective, because ds is in a place where he can relate to individuals. I also prefer the Eggleston books that HOD Bigger uses to the CLP books used in MFW Adv or HOD Beyond. The year after that we plan to use Jenn's (http://www.ourlosbanos.com/homeschool/history/worldstudies.html) modified WP CATW with our then 12th grader and our then 2nd grader! The year after that we will use SL1+2 or HOD Preparing or some variation of world history that uses CHOW with our then 3rd grader. Just how we plan to do it- Mandy
Angel
I am saving MFW Adventures for 3rd grade so I can go through MFW's cycle through 8th grade. I went with Five in a Row for the 2nd grade year, just to get me by (and she listened in on some of older dd's history in SL). It's been fun and I'm looking forward to Adventures next year. If you are thinking of sticking with MFW for a while, I might wait a year for Adventures. But that's just me:D I'd pick WP probably, just cause we havn't enjoyed SL this year as much as I thought with my older dd.
AudreyTN
We did half of ADV this year. It just didn't have enough info for my 3rd and 2nd grader. It really is an excellent program, but it only touches on the most important events. If your child loves history you may want something that goes a little deeper. mommysweird
Hmmm, Not sure if my child loves History yet or not. I do know this - we just read some of the SL books last year in K for read-alouds and he still remembers and talks about them. He doesn't *love* reading (yet, I'm still holding out hope), but I think if I could just find stuff he's really interested in, he'd like it A LOT more. That's why I'm attracted to SL. I'm attracted to MFW because of the strong Bible focus. WP seems to have a little of both, but the Bible is still disconnected much like SL. I'm still just so torn. I'm planning to go to the state convention this year and I hope getting my hands on some stuff will help me decide, although WP isn't going to be there. Of course, I'll probably get there and become even more confused by adding more choices! :001_unsure:
