KarenNC
A while back I came across a novel called "Black Crows, White Cockades" by Christine Swager. It's about a 13 year old girl in Camden, SC during the Rev War and her role in helping obtain information for the patriots fighting with Francis Marion. We're using it as a read-aloud in place of "Johnny Tremain" to give a picture of what the war was like in this area of the country (doesn't hurt that the main character is a girl <wink>, but there's plenty of battle information). The author is retired from the USC education department and said she wanted to help children understand that the Rev War didn't only happen in New England. She said the battle information, clothing, lifestyles, etc are all historically accurate, though the main characters are fictional. Lots of details of battles and things going on in the NC/SC areas during the Rev War. We're up to chapter 10 and my daughter is enjoying it. There's a follow-up novel as well. The same publisher has a site with other SC Rev War books that might be of interest http://www.sandlapperpublishing.com/YrAmericanrevolution.htm. Beach Mom
Thank you for the recommendation. I happened to be looking for a Revolutionary war book for my DD today. I like Johnny Tremain but we recently did Swiss Family Robinson and I was hoping for a more girl oriented read this time. This sounds perfect, I'm off to Amazon to find it. KarenNC
I understand---we're reading a *lot* of colonial and Rev War books and finding one that is both set in our area and with a girl as the main character is really rare :). I thought about doing Johnny Tremain as well, but we are already reading and doing so much with this era that I want to be able to get to 1850 sometime in the foreseeable future!:)
