julesmama3
My son is in 2nd grade and is using CLE(he's in 302 now). I started him in Right Start and this year switched to CLE where he has progressed very quickly. Each day a new concept is taught but it doesn't challenge him at all and complains of everything being too easy. He probably does less that half each lesson just because he has mastered it and I know he doesn't need the practice. He completes his speed drills in a minute or less without any mistakes. Any suggestions? Do I make him do a couple of lessons a day-just the new concepts? Switch to a new math curriculum? Thanks, Julie
Haiku
It doesn't sound like a curriculum problem to me. It sounds like he's in the wrong level. Can you skip him ahead to a level that challenges him? Tara
SilverMoon
Disclaimer: I'm not familiar with that particular curriculum. ;) Given your description I'd either double up lessons and only do half of them, or start skipping lessons.
Aurelia
I'd speed up the pace or skip lessons until he gets to a point where he is being challenged. There's nothing to be gained by plodding through material he already knows.
bettyandbob
I'd have him do chapter tests until he has trouble and start there. Did you have him take a placement test before you picked the level?
Haiku
I'd have him do chapter tests until he has trouble and start there. Good idea! Tara
julesmama3
Thanks. I will try the chapter test idea. I guess we were flying through 2nd grade math and I thought we would slow down once we hit 3rd but I guess not.... I appreciate the responses! JenAL
Did he take the placement test for CLE? I'm very thankful we decided to do the placement tests. They aren't that expensive and I feel good knowing we will be using the right level....not too hard, not too easy. If you don't want to do the placement test, I like the idea from the pp about taking the tests until he starts to struggle with something. That's actually a wonderful idea, IMO. TracyR
Yes, definitely sounds like he's in the wrong level. I don't know if there are quizes in the 2nd level but if you do I would have him take those. If not maybe have him take the self tests and see if there are any concepts he has difficulty in and then go back to those in the Light units.
