Melissa in St Louis
The kiddos and I are going ice skating this morning at an indoor rink -- how many layers/what do we wear? Thanks! Melissa in St Louis
lynn
I usually wear my flannel lined jeans, long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt, earmuffs or hat and mittens. Have fun.
unsinkable
Skating is hard physical work so layers are your best option. It sounds like you all haven't skated before? You might get tired sooner than you think. What you wear depends on the insulation in the rink and the outdoor temp. Some rinks here are basically surrounded by corrugated metal. It is freezing when it is cold outside! Other rinks are in more climate controlled buildings so you don't need much more than a very heavy sweatshirt. My advise is jeans or cords (so the snow brushes off and doesn't get wet), long sleeve t-shirt, winter coat and an extra sweatshirt to change out w/coat if you get too hot. Must haves: Mittens and helmets. Does this help?
Hillary in KS
We don't like to be too bulky, so we wear long john pants and jeans. (Or windbreaker pants, if you have them. They won't wick up the moisture from the ice when- I mean if- you fall.) We wear a long-sleeved shirt, a sweater/sweatshirt, and a light but warm jacket. Also, mittens, and maybe a hat. Layers are key. Rented skates are often not very comfy. So we wear at least 2 pair of socks. They'll give you a little extra comfort and padding. They also help protect against blistered ankles. Make sure they're taller socks, don't wear anklets! Lace those skates up as tight as you can! Have fun!

I have to share that in our house more than one layer is bulky! :) Also, if you really get into skating and buy your own skates, never buy skates that need 2 pairs of socks to fit correctly. 2 pairs of socks are more likely to cause blisters b/c they have a tendence to shift and crease. HollyDay
We dont have a rink near us anymore  But, when we did - I would wear jeans, long sleeve shirt with a sweat shirt, gloves or mittens. Sometimes, I would get hot enough to take off the sweat shirt, but usually not. Nice cozy socks too. If you are using rental skates, you might want to take different weights of socks - you might need to layer them to help the skates fit. By the way, last time I went skating it was 90 plus degrees out - so we wore shorts, tank tops and flip flops to the rink! Have a great time!! Yes! Absolutely! However, for rental skates, we think that 2 pair are essential. :)
Melissa in St Louis
This is great, thanks!!! It has been 10 years at least sice I've skated. And never before with little ones. Thank God my brother is going along! :D Melissa in St Louis
sweetfeet
When my dd took skating lessons last year she wore jeans or fleece track pants with a long sleeved t and fleece jacket over. Gloves were necessary as she fell a lot the first few times and her hands were on the ice a lot.
