Alexandra
I inherited 9 chickens and a hostile (to me anyway) rooster. It has been raining here in Texas and the coop is just gross... So I was reading about cleaning the coop. Apparently chickens harbor mites! So do I need to treat for this vermin? Also I need to do something about the muddy ground inside the coop I am guessing...? Not to mention poop removal...:tongue_smilie: Yippee!
Remudamom
I'd use diatemaceous earth. I couldn't tell you where to get it though. We used to order it from some place we found over the internet. You can't do much about poop in an open yard. I use hay for bedding in my coop. It's easy to scoop out, poop and all. Then I sweep the concrete floor and put down new hay. Old hay gets burned. bigdogs29906
Welcome to the world of chickens! We find ours quite addicting. Check out www.backyardchickens.com they have pretty much everything you need to know. For me, it is hard to answer your questions without seeing what kind of set up you have. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Mandamom
I'd use diatemaceous earth. I couldn't tell you where to get it though. We used to order it from some place we found over the internet. Don't konw why I opened this thread as I'm not a chicken person (other than to eat them, LOL) but I have bought food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) at our local gardening shop. It was pretty cheap. (Pool grade DE and food grade DE are not the same thing.) Good luck cleaning the coop.
Spy Car
Be very careful what kind of diatomaceous earth you use because the wrong kind can cut your lungs (and the chickens lungs) very badly, it is an extreme health risk, and even the "good" kind is more risky than I'm comfortable using.
