mazakaal
Anyone know of a great book with a little bit about each king or queen since William I that's written for a 6yo? I have the Tony Robinson book, but would like something with just a little more info. I've thought about Kings and Things. Would this be good? Any other suggestions? Thanks. Kings and Things is a great book, but it may go over better when your son is a little older. It depends on the child. Here's a better one for most six-year olds: http://www.amazon.com/Kings-Queens-Family-Read-Aloud-Collection/dp/0806636122 HTH.
mazakaal
This looks good. Does it cover all the kings and queens? I notice that it's a volume 2. How many volumes are there? Thanks.
Sebastian (a lady)
Anyone know of a great book with a little bit about each king or queen since William I that's written for a 6yo? It doesn't cover everyone, but there is a book compiled from Winston Churchhill's writings that has quite a few. The title is Heroes of History. My copy was published in 1968 by Dodd Mead & Co. There are several used copies available on Amazon.com, so maybe Amazon.co.uk will have some too. I also have a DK style book set from Snapping Turtle Press that I got from the Tower of London giftshop a few years ago. My version had four paperback books that covered from early kings (pre-1066 but I don't remember who was the first) up to Queen Elizabeth II. I was impressed and made connections reading it that I hadn't made before (like how William & Mary came to the throne and then how Queen Anne came in). This looks like an upcoming reprint by the same author. Is this the type of book that a British public library might have? These are both maybe too advanced for your ds to read on his own, but maybe as a read aloud. I've quite fond of the Churchill book.
Willow
Our Island Story by H E Marshall. Its free on Librivox.
mazakaal
Thanks for the suggestions. We read Our Island Story last year. It was really good, but a bit too long for what I'm looking for this year. I wanted to cover a king or queen per day, so just a couple of pages on each king or queen. I'll check out the other books, though. The books I've seen in the library are a bit too old for her - more facts than narrative. Thanks! AudreyTN
Our Island Story by H E Marshall. Its free on Librivox. :iagree:You can also find it here. And if you find "An Island Story" somewhere, it's the same book.

JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
I haven't looked recently but are any of the Ladybird books about the Kings and Queens still in print? I think they would be good for that age. Typically just one or two small pages with an illustration.
mazakaal
LOL I have the Ladybird books - two editions actually. I bought an old edition - a two book set - used. Then I found a new one volume edition and bought that. It's good, but more spitting out facts than narrative - great for 8-10yo (which is how old my ds were when I read it to them). I have most of the books that were suggested, and they're all great books, jut not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe what I'm looking for just isn't out there. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
