Julie in Austin
I'm 33 and until today I had never had split pea soup. In fact, I was vaguely suspicious of it. But I made it today and it might now be my favorite soup. And did I mention that it is healthy, very little work, and super cheap? Here's the recipe I used: Put in crock-pot on high for five hours: 1 lb. dried split peas 2 c diced onions 1.5 c diced carrots 1 c diced celery 2 t garlic 1/2 t pepper 3 chicken bouillion cubes 7 cups of water 2 cups of diced ham I added a little seasoning salt, too. I served it with cornbread.
joannqn
I think you just made my husband's day. He likes split pea soup but the rest of us do not. I'll probably try your recipe out for him (first homemade split pea soup) since it looks so easy and made something else for us.
Stacey in MA
Just dump all of those ingredients in there and turn it on. Dinner is done for you for in a few hours! My DD4 hates it, but my older 2 love it, and so DH and I! Last time I made it, I used turkey ham, which (I'm hoping?) made it a touch healthier. Still tasted awesome! I either make cornbread or breadmaker-bread to go with it, and maybe a salad. Yum! I know what I'm making for dinner next! ha! :-)
HRAAB
Split pea is my #1 favorite closely followed by lentil soup. So easy to make. Janet
katemary63
I grew up on this soup. My mother would take a loaf of french bread, cut it into crouton sized cubes, then brown them in butter in a saute pan. We used them as "croutons" in our soup and it is SO good! Try it! Sophia
I have peas soaking right now so I can make soup tomorrow! Your recipe looks very similar to what I'm going to do but on the stove instead of the crockpot. First time making it, hope it turns out well. catalinakel
At our house split pea soup is called (lovingly) slops. Can't get enough of that stuff! I don't use garlic or chicken broth(just water) and instead of salt I use soy sauce..and lots of black pepper and a pinch of thyme...yummers. Susan in KY
So, will it totally ruin the after glow if I tell you it's even better with the juice of a lemon added (or a wedge on the side, squirted into the bowl)? It is, I promise! I really wanted spilt pea tonight, but I got talked into 15 bean, and it's g-o-n-e. :D Soooooo yummy on a cold day! Rosie_0801
This is the best soup in the world, if made with homemade stock: The Best Soup in the World (Serves about 6) Ingredients 2 tsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 4 cardamom pods, bruised 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp garam masala ½ tsp chilli powder (or to your taste) 6 curry leaves 2 large carrots, chopped 2 large potatoes, chopped 100g button mushrooms, chopped 1 litre vegetable stock 425g tin diced tomatoes 2 tbsp lemon juice ½ cup (125ml) coconut milk ½ cup frozen peas Method Heat oil in large pan, cook onions and cardamom, stirring until onion is browned lightly. Add ground spices, curry leaves, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, stock and tinned tomatoes. Boil, then immediately simmer, uncovered for about 15 mins, or until vegies are tender. Add juice and coconut mils, then simmer uncovered for 10 mins. Add peas and simmer for a further 3 mins. If possible, remove curry leaves and cardamom pods. Serve and receive compliments! :D Rosie- who made pea soup with a bit of miso for flavouring just the other day. It was good, but not the best ;)
pixeldog
Wow, cardamom pods....I'll bet that *is* good! FYI: You don't have to soak split peas. You can use olive oil and BAKON Vegan yeast seasoning instead of ham. kalanamak
Just dump all of those ingredients in there and turn it on. Dinner is done for you for in a few hours! Or a pressure cooker which makes it very quickly. I use a whole dried chipotle, mojita type from Penzey's, instead of the ham. If you don't "break into it" in any way, it does not add fire to the recipe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipotle
kalanamak
This is the best soup in the world, No, you are both mistaken. This easy winner is from From the Earth: Tomato Potato Soup Heat a big pot with 2 1/2 T peanut oil. Add 2 teas minced garlic 1 T minced ginger Stir until garlic starts to tan Add 1 2/3 C diced onion. Stir and let cook for 5 minutes on low heat Turn heat up and add 3 C EACH diced tomato and potato. Add 3-4 cups good saltless or low-salt veggie stock (I used graham Kerr's, which has a couple teas. of minced ginger in it) 1 1/4 teas salt 1 1/4 teas sugar Simmer until potato is soft but NOT falling apart. Add 1/2 C chopped scallion and 1 teas. of the dark sesame oil
sleepy
Yummy! I love split pea soup. Just made it last weekend, and had enough leftovers for me to enjoy for lunch 3 times this week.
