Michelle My Bell
I love to use picture books to read aloud to my kindergarten daughter and my 2nd grade daughter. I love to teach them history, science, literature, fables, fairy tales etc... this way. What are your favorites? Not necessairily the ones you see posted all over, the lesser known favorites would be great! I am putting in requests at my library, and the more the better!!! Chris in VA
I love the Bruce Colville Shakespeare adaptations--but I think I would hold off until 2nd grade. The language is rich and the plots are a little twisty-turny.

pixeldog
Cooper Edens has compiled several classics, and the illustrations are SOOOO nice. The Tales from the Brothers Grimm are especially wonderful, nice, classic, very rich images. Nancy in NC

Michelle Oh, I just added all my kids' picture books to Library Thing last weekend and saw several that I just LOVE for the purpose you named. Oddhopper Opera by Kurt Cyrus - insects (Wonderful! A perennial favorite here!) Hotel Deep by Kurt Cyrus - ocean How to Dig a Hole to the Other Side of the World by Faith McNulty - Learn the layers of the Earth in the most fun way! Children Just Like Me by Anabel Kindersley - not a story book but my kids just LOVE it. I know there are more but my brain says it's time to hit the hay. eternalknot
Author/Illustrator Allen Say is a favorite at our home, and he is easily found (if somewhat sparsely!) at public libraries. His books have beautiful, large illustrations and storylines that speak to both my 3 year old as well as my 8 year old. Truly "something for everyone" books that are perfect for your kids' ages. These books can easily springboard into discussions on culture, geography, and history. Our favorites include: Grandfather's Journey and Tea with Milk.
