Kirsten in MO
Where have you gone on a vacation with your husband that is worth recommending? My husband wants to take me on a trip this summer without the kids and I want your best endorsements! The criteria is that it has to be a warm place (my husband suggested an Alaskan cruise, but sounds too cold to me!). I am thinking the Bahamas or something like that. Would a cruise be better than just getting a hotel somewhere for a week? I want this to be a great trip since we have not had a vacation alone since our honeymoon over 17 years ago! Can you go to Hawaii for a week without selling the farm? I look forward to hearing about your best, fun, romantic without-kids-vacation! Thanks1 Kirsten
katemary63
Well, if you wait till Nov, you can go to Puerto Vallarta. We love it there and it is very reasonable price wise. At least it was, it's been a few years since our last trip. Aren't most "warm" places outside the US TOO warm in the summer?
KatieJ
Hawaii is very expensive. Been there twice, once on some inheritance money, once out of our pocket. DH lvoes it enough to want to go back, but I keep telling him one day he will want to retire!
eternalknot
Hawaii is pretty cheap right now - we went earlier this month and got the presidential suite at an upscale major chain for $75/night. Beautiful views of Diamond head over breakfast on the lanai - can't be beat. Our family has a condo on another island that we rent out for most of the year. Prices have gone down significantly this year because nobody is travelling. The condos are usually cheaper than a hotel if you're staying longer than a weekend - ours is beachfront, kitchen, etc and is fairly typical of what is available. I also like the Turks & Caicos islands; there is a Club Med there and all-inclusive is always nice for stress-free vacations. I'm not a cruise person, I don't find those relaxing. Forced socialization isn't my thing, I like getaways :P Have fun planning a wonderful trip!
dani3boys
My dh and I went there almost three years ago and fell in love with it. We hope to go back there this May. It is about an hour south of Cancun right on the Caribbean coast. It is such a neat place to visit with the beautiful beaches and great food. It feels more authentic than Cancun. If you want to know more let me know.

It's right on the ocean, and there are nifty ruins right there as well as the charming little town of Tulum. We loved it.
Stacia
Hawaii is beautiful. Cruises are also fun. Not all of them are forced socialization, as someone else mentioned (or else I wouldn't be going either) -- but you need to choose carefully to get what you want (high energy, lots of things to do, more low-key, older or younger passengers, etc...). I was never keen on the idea of eating dinner w/ strangers (standard on the big cruise ships), so we've always requested a small table to ourselves as soon as boarding the ship & have had no problems. A great, wonderful option for cruising is a smaller sailing ship. We've been on Windstar twice & I can say it was totally wonderful in every way. Of course, if you really want to get away & relax, a hut over the water in Tahiti should do the trick. :D
ekarl2
I highly recommend a cruise. You get to see three or four different places and only have to unpack once. I bet they'll be some great deals since the economy is bad. Here are some things I learned. 1. Pay extra for a balcony stateroom. It's a little piece of heaven all your own. 2. Don't feel like you have to DO everything. A vacation is a time to see stuff AND a time to rest. Pick and choose what you want to do, but schedule in time just to veg out. 3. If you choose a package that has a land tour portion in addition to the cruise (either before or after), do the land tour first. It's a little tiring (getting up early to meet buses and tours) but is TOTALLY worth it. That way you can relax on the cruise. I've cruise Mexico and the Caribbean. Both were awesome. I worked for Princess Cruises in Alaska for four years. If you go at the warmest time (July), you'll pay the most, but you'll really enjoy it. The temp in Anchorage is about 75 in July, Fairbanks can get up to 100. BUT, they're by no means tropical, so if that's what you want, do Alaska another time. Also, the clientele in Alaska is older, a lot of retirees, not NEAR as many kids as you'll find in tropical locations. If you do decide to go to Alaska, feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to tell you what you should see and what you can miss. The train from Anchorage to Fairbanks, IMHO, is a must-do. It's AWESOME! Rosie_0801
We love to road trip. You can see a lot in a week, and won't have to listen to anyone whining or asking if we are there yet. Rosie
MamaT
My husband and I have taken about 5 or 6 cruises alone, and they were HEAVEN! My favorite itinerary is Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Key West. We have taken that one twice. There are so many things to do on a cruise, or you can choose to do nothing at all. We made the mistake last year of taking the children along, so I'm not sure we'll ever get to go by ourselves again. BTW the food is great. The first cruise we went on, I gained 7 lbs. in one week! Kirsten in MO
Just wanted to thank you ladies for all the great suggestions! I've written them down and will see what my husband thinks. I appreciate the tips too, regarding cruises, etc. I'm not sure I like the idea of gaining 7 pounds in a week though! :D I'll say one thing, that picture of the hut over the water in Tahiti makes me want to go right now, as it is 26 degrees outside as I am typing this! If anyone else wants to add their ideas, please do. I will check back periodically. thanks again!!
