Loved Hillyer for history rdg.... What about Hillyer's geography?

Recommended Posts

Ds10 has enjoyed the style of Child's History of the World so much that I am considering his geography. I am interested in a good overview and enjoyable read for him, as with CHOW.

The drawback would seem to be all the changes in geography since CHOW was published. Has this bothered anyone else?

If you loved CHOW.... and used CGOW I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts and recommendations.

My other consideration is A Child's Geography: Exploring the Holy Land (Voskamp) b/c we are studying Ancients currently. Is this considered "enjoyable" reading?

Thanks for any input!

Cheryl

We read much of Child's Geography of the World several years ago. Yes, it is outdated. It's quaint in a way, to hear how Hillyer paints some of the other countries. But, I still found it interesting. And since I was reading aloud, I could skip parts that were completely obsolete or out of touch.

This geography choice will have to be for independent rdg. I wouldn't mind things like "one day man will travel to the moon" since that's obvious, LOL, and easily understood as outdated. But I am unsure about using CGOW b/c of the not-so-obvious to my ds10.

Any other good geography "easy reads" to consider for overview of world geography? Anyone?

CGOW might not be the best choice for a 10yo to read, as Hillyer occasionally uses terminology/descriptions of people/races/etc. that many would consider unacceptable.

I don't have any other geography suggestions. I bought CGOW hoping it would be a good read-aloud, but I had to edit on the fly so often that I gave it up after a couple of chapters.

I just stumbled upon the other geography books you are talking about by Voskamp. Anyway they are written in the style of hilyer's CHOW. Anyway with the CD I don't really think you could go wrong. They look enjoyable enough. The only thing i don't know about is doing book 2 b/4 book 1...but i'm really clueless as i just saw them for the first time the other day. But they do look awesome and I'm really tempted to get at least book 1 to read through on my own!!! LOL!

I have it. I haven't used it, however. I like it as a general cultural introduction. It does a decent job of giving the "feel" of regions. But it's very dated, so as big an issue as the geo changing is the racism issues. I may read parts of it to my kids in a couple yrs, but it's not a book I would feel good about just handing them to read, without a lot of discussion.

My son read this on his own for fun!! He would just laugh at some of the outdated information. It did give him a good 'over-view' of geography. I wouldn't use it as a stand alone geography book, but as a supplement and enjoyable read.

Sorry that I'm just getting back to this thread! My dc loved Windows on the World several years ago when we studied geography. It's actually a book about Christian missions so don't know if that will fit for you. The book has gorgeous pictures about many differnent countries and people groups.
