LA options-IEW + what else?

Ok...My son was very behind in writing. He seems to be taking leaps and bounds now over the last few weeks. He started IEW SWI B and is in week 6. He is writing really well now. I have no clue how it clicked...but I am THRILLED.

So here is what I am wondering.

He is going to continue with IEW. I have been using SL LA but I think it's main focus is on writing so I may just drop it for the remainder of our years. I think it is too much writing. I prefer the IEW as he is doing so well.

Now....What else do you NEED for LA? He is reading with SL so I dont want to overload him with reading tons of books. He hates to read and struggles a bit...so SL is a stretch as it is.

I dont think he would have a problem with adding something like TLP as I can stretch the reading out. He is currently using:

SL LA 4, Wordly Wise 7, Sequential Spelling, and IEW SWI B.

I am thinking of dropping all the LA and possibly going with TLP next year with SICC.

I dont want to overload him as he is finally catching up. TLP seems like you cover all the basics without being to overwhelming.

or...should I stick with SL LA6 next year (along with Core 6) and use the techniques he learned from IEW for his writing and just continue with their LA method. I am just wondering if all the writing is enough.

I'm not sure about a particular program, but how much Grammar (parts of speech) have you covered in the past? If your son hasn't had much, then you could add a grammar book.

My son is also starting to really blossom with IEW! He even said recently that he likes writing. I about fell out of my chair, lol! IEW has a program called "Fix-it Grammar" that I am considering using with ds next year. It would be editing, so it would cover all the basic language rules as well.

Language Arts consists of literature, writing & grammar. You seem to have literature covered with Sonlight and writing with IEW. So you might want to add grammar. I'm not familar with FixIt. We are using Analytical Grammar and really like it. You can do it in one, two or three years and then no more grammar is needed. It is designed for 6th & up. I hope this helps you.

Congrats!!!

Having used several TLP guides, I would not consider the grammar instruction

enough. I am not sure if you have looked through them, they are in my experience more of a Literature Analysis Guide, with a smattering of grammar not the other way around.

I think you will find an overlap of writing.

I agree with the basics being covered, but the SWICC is more than basics and this is why I think he may benefit from an isolated grammar program, by allowing IEW to teach ALL the writing instruction. This way he is consistently using the IEW techniques instead of falling back on old habits when doing a TLP assignment, unless you feel you can maneuver him back to the IEW format. I only say this because it seems he is having much success with IEW, and I think especially for these kids (having taught all SWI levels at a co-op) they need the consistant techniques drilled in:) But you know best;)

I know nothing about SL LA other that you saying there is a lot of writing in it. How about sticking with your other choices of Sequential Spelling, Wordly Wise, IEW and then a grade level grammar book like Easy Grammar/Daily Grams, that will only add about 20 minutes and has ONLY Grammar with no added writing or reading.

Just a thought!:D

For us, LA at that level consists of:

Grammar

Reading comprehension or Literature

Composition

Spelling (if still needed ) and/or Vocabulary

Total Language Plus would fill the reading comprehension and spelling/vocab. But you would still need a grammar program unless he is very strong in grammar and doesn't need a program. I think some guides have more grammar than others.

Some grammar options:

Easy Grammar

Growing With Grammar

Hake Grammar (w/o the writing portion)

I think I may save the money on the SL la and just get the IEW along with AG, wordly wise and continue our sequential spelling and SL Literature. That would make it a solid program?

Then I would have him working on strictly grammar, writing, literature and vocab/spelling. Our spelling, and vocab dont take long at all...but writing takes a good 45 minutes to over an hour most days. I think AG would be a nice addition to IEW.
