homeschoolin'mygirls
My dd went to a Japanese film festival and loved it. The films were in Japanese, with English subtitles. How can I find more of these films? Renting would be great but we could if needed swing buying some titles. She wants to have movie nights with her friends that are also excited about the Japanese language. Specificly I am looking for teen friendly movies (does not have to be anime) that are in Japanese with an option of English subtitiles. Any ideas? Please? nandell

Please? nandell[/quote'] Netflix has a lot of foreign films. We have gotten a lot of anime, Bollywood, etc from there. Sometimes dvds will have options to do subtitles or dubbing. We tend to like subtitles better around here. Do be careful with the anime---there is an extremely wide variety in levels of content, including a lot that are *not* for other than adults (and, in my case, not for this adult;)). Kessepha
I second Netflix, but since they carry virtually everything, you'll want to screen what you get before sharing it. I haven't seen any Japanese films (my sons' godfather LOVES Japanese movies) but I'm a fan of Korean films. You'll find that the cultural standards are different, sometimes in surprising ways and the pacing is very different, too. My favorite Korean film is SpinKick, a martial arts film with plot and actual decent acting. :)
Heather in the Kootenays
Hayao Miyazaki's movies are popular with my 16 yo dd and most are suitable for younger kids too. We watch them in English but they probably have an Japanese audio track on the DVD.
secular_mom
I just watched part of My Neighbor Totoro in Japanese with English subs last night. There were lots of small differences between that one, and the English version. You can watch some anime in japanese with subtitles on hulu.com such as Naruto and Death Note, for example. Though Death Note has violence in it, so you may not approve.
HSDCY
I have not seen this, but my friend's 12 yo daughter really likes "Prince of Tennis". It's an animated movie and you can watch it for free on YouTube. Wiki has a page on this you might want to check out first.
