For those who use/have used Rod and Staff Bible-any of their grade 5-8, a question

Did your dc like it? I have actually done the grade 5 myself and liked it a lot, and I'm thinking of doing the grades 5-8 with dd to give her a good chronological study with maps, historical info, etc., but I do want it to be enjoyable. (We would do it orally together, so I'm hoping that will help.) I really want her to gain a love and thirst for God's Word, so I don't want it to be tedious.

I'm just wondering how others' dc have liked it (or not)?

We are in our second of year of doing this orally. We started doing the workbook but it was very time consuming. I don't think the boys are missing anything by doing it orally. We start our day with this and just go as far as we can in 30 minutes. We are not doing the review sections. We take turns reading from the Bible aloud and the boys answer the questions orally. I have never studied the Bible chronilogically and systematically before so we are all learning a lot. The boys have said that it is one of their favorite parts of the day.

Oh, I'm just thrilled to hear that they like it! And I just had it out and was trying to figure out how to break up the lessons because I think when doing it orally you can do a little more than they say. I LOVE your idea of doing 30 minutes per day! I will definitely use that idea! I really thought that not having them write all that out, but doing it orally instead will help the enjoyment/discussion factor; I'm glad to hear this is true. Thanks so much!

Anyone else care to chime in?

We have done the first two years, and we generally take 1 week per lesson. Most lessons have sections A-D, although some weeks section A takes my kids 2 days. I generally have them work on the lessons for ~30 minutes, although I don't actually time it, then we discuss things on Friday.

Depending on your dd's age, orally might be fine, although by the time my kids were 5th grade or so I think they gained something by looking up passages and searching for some of the information themselves.

One suggestion I will make is that you be sure to use a KJV Bible if you're having your dd do the work independently; some of it is very frustrating if you try to use a different translation.

Sorry, I got distracted early in my answer - I meant to say that we cover 1 lesson per week by doing 1 section per day (A-Mon, B-Tues, C-Weds, D-Thurs), then an oral review on Friday, although on some lessons section A stretches out over 2 days. On those days, we generally combine C&D on Thursday, as those sections are usually brief.

We are using the 5th grade. My DD does about a lesson a week A-D. It doesn't take all that long, maybe 20-30m a day. She loves it. I would also agree with the other poster that using any other translation than a KJV is frustrating, but we do mostly use ESV.

I have made him do the workbook this year. He spreads a lesson over 4 days and on day 5 we go over it together. I think he is at a point where he needs to start writing answers. My purpose for using this program is to get Bible into him. I don't expect great insight or love of it yet but I know he needs it. He hasn't shown great resistance to it this year so he must not think it awful and he seems to have good retention.

I had to laugh this past Sunday as he dragged the KJV Bible to church. I informed him that we do own several "more readable" versions but he said he likes the KJV.
